As far as I'am concerned a dodger is a must any size boat!

And preferably one you don't have to crawl in/out of.

There is a lot of proper structural foam that can be used for cores to keep the structure light.

hooha in my opinion your original drawing has lots in its favour.

Yep middle window hinges up front the top and is on gas struts. Comes with clears for winter and mesh sides to keep out the sun in summer. You can climb on it to stow the main. The racing sailors think it looks ugly, but I'm OK with that as I look in the mirror every morning.

I have a Colvin Gazelle and would like to put a hard dodger on it as the canvas one is rotten.
Is there a website that I could go to for a design?
As the boat is steel I was thinking a steel one.

We have made a start on a full scale mock up to see to get an idea what it might look like. We have made a change to the side windows, it now looks a bit more like the on Sabbaticals Yacht.
Stay tuned, there will be some more aver the next couple of days.
This mock up is of the starboard side only so looks narrow in the pics.

Cutting some weird angles and the first result.


Modified the shape and bought thicker ply. Presto, We have an odd looking twisred box.




We have now started on the roof. and will hopefully have it painted and ready for a test on Tuesday.

I'm going to the boat tommorrow & I'll try to get you the requested dimensions & text a few photos through. We had 6'2" headroom at the helm, tapering to about 5'10" at the companionway and about 5'7" at the port & starboard extremeties at the front of the dodger. If you look up Bluewater's website the drawing of the hard dodger on the centre cockpit version is before we decided to taper it down to the companionway. The mock-up looks good. Keep the pics coming.

Can you tell me who designed the Swarbrick 40? I can't find much info on the net but hull proportions look remarkably similar to my boat which is a Radford / Adams design.

Thanks. It doesn't look like it in the pic but there are some 3d angles built into that box, Should look better when painted and given the roof, This is mainly to look at the scale so it will be getting allot of tweaking before we are finished.
Also like your idea of reducing the head height as you go forward.
I will try & update my 3d drawing tomorrow with some changers I am thinking about.

It's a West Australian design and built. Designer was Kim Swarbrick, she was built in about 1984.

Was also wondering how you access the top of the canopy for packing the sale ect? I assume its low enough to just clime up from the front?

I just drop the sail into lazy jacks and deal with it when it's more convenient, by swing it over to P/S. a Stack Pack works good too, but too much windage to suit me.

I like the 2nd drawing. Looks much nicer than having that long sloping front. Should be better to run lines through to if you decide to do that.

I like the second one myself.
We have completed the mock up. Looks ok from a distance so should be good for a few photos. Its based on the first design but should give us an idea what it will look like.

I don't mind if you post the pictures. I just clamber up the front to stand on the canopy to pack the sail. However I am having non skid applied tommorrow to help. I thought your drawings looked like a ladder set up for the rear canopy support which would be ideal. Do you really want to split the windows in half as in the mock up?
