I don't think delamination of sheet goods like Formica, Wilson Art, etc. is an issue at all. After 44 years, the formica in my boat is all still solid. I used to do mica work for a living. If it's done right, on the right substrate, it lasts until you get tired of looking at it. The color selections, ability to replace damage, ability to change it when you get tired of the color are all big plusses for laminates. Hard, heavy products like marble or granite are pretty but impractical. Many of them stain terribly. They crack. Anything dropped on them breaks. I would not want a piece of marble flying about in a storm! Corian, Swanstone, etc. would be ok but they are expensive. If expense is no issue, s.s. would have to be the best choice for countertops on a boat.

Take care with Corian as it does expand and contract with temperature changes....check the spec. sheet and make allowances for the movement.

we have a stainless steel sink integral with a stainless steel surround in the center off the boat over the engine. Nicely done a perfect for around the sink - but I would not use it for all the counter tops in the galley or else ware. We are luck in that we have a large galley in our center cockpit boat. The old laminate lasted a long time - 26 some years and we didn't have to replace it - it was discolored, scratched and abused. because the original installation was don so well - simply redoing the laminate -in the same way it was installed was not possible. How do you get Corian? Everywhere I have been it is installed only by DuPont trained specialists - they won't sell it to the average sailor...

How can you possibly say that corian is light?

12mm BS1008 marine ply is 6.3 kilos per square metre
Then laminex or similar at 1 kilo per square metre
= 7.3 kilos per square metre

Compare that to
Corian® 12mm sheet material @ 24 kilos per square metre

Lighter than steel of the same thickness?
Lighter than concrete?
Lighter than lead?

wow... 12mm Corian! We have half that laminated onto plywood. Corian must be very dense to gain it's properties. Wouldn't want anything else aboard!

Doesnt look like 6mm on ply to me and possibly even thicker than 12mm.

I could probably understand it on a large heavy cruising mono, a bit of extra weight is neither here nor there,
But on a multi, where weight is bad, it seems like a poor choice, especially if you have gone out of your way to save weight at expense during the build only to give it away by plonking a lump of manufactured rock on the counter tops

Finally done - The Peregrine Sea: The New Counters and a brighter cabin Yes, the solid surface material is relatively heavy, but if your galley is small then you are are not talking about significant weight. We used in in the galley as well as in the main cabin. It is worth the trouble, and added weight - for us anyway.
