Need Refit Advice for My CSY 33

Im looking for everyones advice on which motor I should put in my 1978 33' CSY I just purchased. She (The Cayman Jewel) has what I believe is her original 30hp Westerbeke in her. The previous owners last used her 10 years ago and she has been up on a lift ever since. Motor was running fine then but when I say they have done NOTHING to her mechanically since, I mean nothing. So because of that the motor is completely frozen up. I guess theres a chance I could get it loose but in the end I would end up having to rebuild her Im sure. Im looking to possibly put in a yanmar 3GM. Interested in input and advice, ESPECIALLY from anyone with a 33' CSY who has had to go through it. My budget is as low as possible. Im a sailboater of course. Thanks for the advice.

worth taking out the injectors and letting some diesel sit in there for a few weeks,westerbekes are good engines.

also take into account the prop size and gear ratio if you do re-engine.
also engine mounting/mounts

3gm yanmars are good engines,aslong as they have good air water and clean fuel.

As this engine has not been used or maintained for 10 years and is now frozen, you should assume the worst. I suspect that you can make it work again but this is likely to cost you as much as, or more than buying a new engine. Get a mechanic to check it for you.

First off westerbeke IMHO does not & has not made engines.They simply(or in some cases not so simply)marinieze them.The engine you have is usually very durable & personally would repair is cost effective.If that is the motor I think it is it is a British-Leyland,used in tractors.If more data needed can help.marc

Suggest getting a few (actual) quotes on a complete install of new com[parable unit; then, get a few for a complete R&R of your rebuild.Seems it's the peripherals and re-bed that cost so much in labor/materials; nearly twice engine cost (generally).
Try to figure what it would. take for a DIY R&R and get a quote for rebuild only.
I had an old, siezed, propane fired. 4 cyl Genny(15Kw!) rebuilt at a shop for $1200. A new comparable unit spends nearer $10K !!

Low budget engine refits are questionable, in my opinion.

Meaning ,where are you cutting corners to fit your budget?
What your engine bay can accommodate, size or fit.

If it's in the engine bed ,can you now work on it?
Fuel use considerations, how much can you carry in your tanks.

Where are you planning on cruising, warm water, cold water.
How much thrust, do you need for where your cruising.
Straights of Magellan, lots of currents, middle of the pond, not so much.

If you go the yanmar gm type.
Remember that theses are high speed diesels, clog up the exhaust if you run them at low RPMs for hrs, and are pretty old designs.
Make sure it's pretty fresh,low hrs.
Rebuilds are usually done in the 12000 hrs areas
