Yeah those solinoids can draw a couple of amps and produce a fair amount of heat. We discussed this issue here sometime back and somebody had the answer. Apparently the valves will work on 9V. So somehow the voltage was reduced which still allowed the valve to work OK, but reduced the current dramaticly. Can't remember how, but a search should find the info.
