Hey, is there somewhere you can see boat builders close to you?

Is there any kind of tool or anything that can direct you to boat manufacturers or private boat builders close to an area? I'm in southern illinois, anyone building any types of boats in this area? If so i'd love to help and learn.

Having built a few boats...

I sort of like "building" boats (Hartley 32' ferro, Van de Stadt 6.5 ply, currently fitting out a Roberts 44 steel), but there were always boatbuilders near where I lived or was visiting.

There isn't the same level of building nowadays. Mostly it seems to be in Asia, so unless you travel and like visiting factories there really might not be much.

And with the current work and safety concerns visitors hanging round are not encouraged.

I know it seems like a long way from real boats but have you tried building models? It can be cheap and you get an overall feel for what a boat is like that is absent from real life.

And if you get to try the real thing you know just how it should all go - except for the interior!
