I only have access to a 1/4" Lazy Tongs which I borrow. My own Lazy Tongs go up to 3/16". I'm sure I could buy one of those hydraulic riveters which look good but I only have occasional use for 1/4" / 6 mm rivets.

I don't think I could get enough force on the 1/4" Lazy Tongs with my legs wrapped around the mast and the Tongs at shoulder height behind my back. Not even if I drank a couple of bottles of Power Aid. $370 for 2 rivets would be extravagant although that might be what I could pay a "man" to do the job. So in this case I'll drill and tap and use Loctite or Duralac and save $370.

Waiting for both a calm day and a friend to winch me up.

The cost comparison isn't too bad if you use 14k or platinum rivets...

YES... $370, (or can be found for 220ish).... Still too much for a 2 rivet job...

If it's Brit, there would still be oil leaks.

Re: Hand Tap or Drill Motor?

The problem with the Comet was the square corners in the windows. After that rounded corners.

And the concrete.

Thanks much Delancy. I'm getting a high-powered riveter. Riveting had occurred to me but the technical problems had not.

They are square. Even the Brits would not put really square corners in the fuselage openings.
Cessna here in the US pressurized one of their single engine models. All kinds of problems not just with the airframe. The engine and exhaust system were the worst problems at first. Then of course there is a life limit on the airframe because of the pressure cycles.

Long ago when I worked on aircraft, we all thought the American aircraft were superior to the British. So I get the point about oil leaks.

I did have a demo ride on a BOAC Comet 4C the length of NZ (around 1959. It was a later model that didn't blow up) I'm sure the pilot was an ex fighter pilot because he started the takeoff run going the wrong way before doing a 360 at speed. Then it was all on climbing and diving and even chasing cattle along paddocks.

I liked flying the BAC 1 elevens with ex fighter jocks at the controls, after the first vertical approach and flair to a short strip.
