Engine Access

I am considering putting an access compartment in the floor of my cockpit to gain ready access to my engine. I've seen the same thing with the Dana 24.

Any thoughts. Or suggestions?

I have seen it on done on a 33 Morgan. The engine needed a rebuild and they cut the cockpit floor for access. The owner made a semi-waterproof plate that covers it.

It's possible with latches and gaskets.

What do you think about using a bomar hatch?

I raised this question a few months ago... The comment for several was that the floor of the cockpit adds rigidity. Unless the hole that was cut had proper structural framing it could weaken the boat.... I decided not to cut and squeeze my 6'3" 225 lb frame into the lazarrette at 57 ain't easy, but I felt safer doing that
