Electrolytic conversion detection

Hope this is the appropriate forum!

Can anyone give me direction on how to check various metal parts of boat (DC wiring system, spars, keel, chainplates) for current that would be causing electrolytic conversion?

I've found some decent articles online about how to properly wire your DC and lightning systems, but nothing on how to know if you've got a problem to begin with. I have a 30+ year old boat that is new to me, and has alot of terminals connected to various metal parts of boat i.e. chainplates all over.

Also, I have read several places that every device on your DC circuit needs its own dedicated return wire to the bus. I understand that they dont want you using parts of the boat as the return (i.e. the mast) but is it really a problem if 4 mast light devices use a common neutral back to the battery bus?

I just corrected my electrolysis problem by hiring a guy with a meter that has degree in elec eng. Found that the shaft strut - mounted below the engine muffler - was not grounded. Not cheap, but problem solved. I also got a good education for my money. Good luck with it.
