I have never seen any scientific papers cited by the people selling magnetic fuel cleaning devices. You don't just want to kill the organisms you need to remove them from the fuel as well before they clump on the bottom of the tank. So the fuel must be filtered.

They do have a fairly compelling lab paper on their site. It is interesting but IMO overpriced for what it is.

Work best AFTER you properly scrub the tank's walls, bottoms, baffles through access ports and polsih the entire mess through centrifigul pumps. Put it in before, with algea attached to the surfaces, it will break free and clog. Add the listed qty each time you add diesel. Has worked for sailboat and my Dad's power boar for years with no issues. We also keep the tanks full and cycle the fuel through use.

Hi my boat came with magnetic de bug units installed for each tank, prior to the racor filters. Did it prevent the diesel bug clogging my fuel lines ? NO.
Although to be honest no bug made it past the unit to the filters so I COULD NOT SEE THE PROBLEM, the filters appeared clear. All the line between the tanks and the units were FULL of black **** and had to be cleaned manually after I discovered what the problem was.
Now I add diesel additive and clean (polish ) my fuel every six months.
Would I fit them to another boat? No
Just my experience.
Cheers Rob

I really wouldn't expect this unit, (or a filter either for that matter) to do much unless you can circulate fuel through it. Fuel sitting stale in a tank is always gonna get something in it (unless you add a chemical)

But I'd be interested to know if fitted in a polish system if filters were cleaner over time.

Re: De-Bug Fuel treatment system????

Diesel bug bacteria grows at the interface of water and fuel, prevention is better than cure so simply keep the water out ! drain any water from the tank via the tank sump,, if you have no drain then look for the fuel gauge, if it's on one side of the tank, remove it, then careen your boat and let it stay in that position overnight if possible,if not minimum 6 hours, so the any water in the bottom of the tank will drain to the point just below the fuel gauge opening, get a hand pump, some lengths of clear pipe and a container, insert the pipe into the tank and VERY VERY slowly start to extract the crud/water from your tank until clear fuel flows, reassemble the fuel gauge. It's a hassle I know but prevention is much much better than cure. Some folks thought it very funny when I posted to ask for a sample of fuel when filling, this is particularly important when cruising 'off the grid' as they will often give you dodgy fuel to get rid off it knowing you won't be back.

Re: De-Bug Fuel treatment system????

I have never heard anything favourable from any users of the De-Bug magnetic system.

Engine failure due to contaminated fuel is a common problem for cruisers. We have hit on a system that works very well for us. I guess reasonably clean lines and tank are needed initially for this to work:

1. Only buy fuel from places we think are high turnover
1. Inspect the fuel to be added by filling a glass jar before filling the tank.
2. Filter the fuel going into the tank.
2. Add Grotmar fuel additive (recommended proportion) when taking on new fuel.
3. Use a "fuel polishing system" (simply a small pump connected to the pick up from the very bottom of our tank, pumping the fuel through an oversized Raycor filter and returning the filtered fuel to the tank) for several hours each and every day.

Power draw is minimal. Fuel, tank and lines stay near spotless.

Re: De-Bug Fuel treatment system????

Thanks so much for the input.
I heard of this system for the first time a few days ago.
I do not think I will buy it.

Thanks again
