Re: Cheap alterantive for watermaker?

Yeah, sounds interesting. If it turns out to be both energy- and cost-effective, it could be revolutionary. Time will tell.

Re: Cheap alterantive for watermaker?

While it does sound interesting, it also deefinitely sounds like they are just in the early stages of R+D ;( they obviously make this announcement when they realize that they can prove the concept, but would need BIG bucks and lots more time before it could be anything useful...

I just hope I'm still cruising by the time that it's actually an available (affordable) product on the market!

There's also this (although it could also be years away from being available inexpensively to consumers):

Thanks Marc It seems like more and more of the world are happy just sitting around as long as things are easy and comfortable! It's unacceptable, people need adventure and natural beauty in their lives...

BWT, love your profile pic, (Bernese mtn dogs have always had a special place in my heart!) my shepherd mix lives on board with me.

That's pretty awesome. Hopefully it doesn't take forever to get product version built out.

Beyond what it means for boaters, the benefits to mankind would be enormous.

Re: Cheap alterantive for watermaker?

...yeah I've been saying for years that the next world war will be fought over clean water, not oil (as many predict)! Everybody likes to complain about gas prices, but imagine paying that (or more) for clean drinking water!?

My uncle is a pilot and flies to many crazy places... the greatest comment he got was from a person who was amazed about where he was from, not becasue it was a powerful, technologically advanced country, but because it was a place where they "flush their toilets with drinking water".....

Isn't that already here?

In London Ontario, the price of gas is $1.30/liter. Bottled water (reverse osmosis from the Pepsi or Coke folks) is $1.45/500ml (1/2 a liter) at the stores. This makes bottled water twice as expensive as gas but nobody ever complains.

Of course this is through the soft drink folks who are charging more for the same processed water that they use to make pop than they do for the pop itself.

Supply and demand.

Water "wars" have already started in the USA in areas like New Mexico and CA. Having good water rights there can be quite valuable.

As our population continues to swell and we pollute more water (N Pacific is gonna be off the list for desal for a long time) the value of good water is going to rise accordingly...buy your water futures now!

...yeah I've heard that in parts of N Cal farmers can make more money selling their water rights than they could working hard all year farming with the water!?

Wasn't there a sci-fi movie based on that concept made some years back?

Re: Cheap Alterantive for Watermaker?

1) 99% may not be good enough for drinking water,
2) before the thing gets into production, the device will be only slightly cheaper than a membrane/pump based desalinator,
3) it may (?) use less energy though.

Let's wait & see.
