Boatyard move

Our boat needs to be moved to a different area in the boatyard so I can work on the bottom. This is new to me. Should I expect to pay for the move or this part of doing business for the boatyard and no charge to me?

Depends, did you tell the yard upfront what needed to be accomplished?

If the yard is aware of your needs or they move you for meet their needs if day it's their dime.

Different managers, who said what etc. Probably just pay the bill and get on with it.

Generally if you are asking them to relocate your boat to meet a specific need of yours, for your convenience, you could be charged. If the boatyard is moving you to meet their needs or for their convenience, they usually do it without charge. This is not always true though, depends on the yard. We have been moved on a number of occasions at different yards, per our request, without being charged. Often it comes down to what kind of customer you are, how much money they are making off of you (are you a long term customer, or do you occasionally hire the yard to do work for you, or shop in their chandlery?), or just what kind of relationship you have with the yard management. Sometimes that doesn't matter either and they go by whatever their policy is or your contract says.

So I guess the short answer would be, it depends.

one obvious question...why would you need to move your boat to do bottom work? what kind of work will you be doing?

Sanding dust sucks for everybody. I hate being next to someone in a boatyard that's doing a bottom job. This marina moves all the paint jobs to a different area.

but everyone has the same job to do in the spring... so no big deal! did they know you were painting the bottom? if so then why did they put you in a place where they would then have to move you?

sounds weird to me. never been in a boat yard where there wasn't bottom work being done by someone. its part of being on the hard!

I still think if the yard wants to move you for their purposes, then you dont pay!

This. Moving for YOUR convenience, you pay. Moving for THEIR convenience, they pay.

As mentioned, there are exceptions, but if they were moving my boat for their convenience, and they wanted me to pay, I would be arguing long and hard before I would cough up any cash. (Then I would look for someplace else for my next haul out.)
