I've never had any trouble cleaning with Acetone before Awlgripping in several years work. However, one marine-store salesman said to use lacquer thinner instead, as it will better dissolve any glues left over from sandpaper. Anyone ever heard of this?

Thanks,
Jack

I think the reason for not using Acetone is that it evaporates too quickly. Wiping down your project with the two rag method requires the solvent to stay liquid so the desolved oils or contaminants can be wiped off while still wet.

In my case I think I blew off the surface with air contaminated with oil. I wiped the surface with Acetone but I did not get all the oil off as the acetone evaporated too quickly resulting in the fish eye problem that this thread was started for.

If the surface is clean to begin with, wiping with Acetone should not cause any problems, like you have experienced.
I have been told that the basic Awlprep solvent (not the wax and degreaser) is denatured alcohol although I have no proof of this. I have not tried lacquer thinner.

Awlgrip - Where did I go wrong?

Just follow instructions... Awlprep with 2-cloth method. I believe it's T0011 ? It works great, has just the right evaporation rate.
EDIT: no, it is T0008

The only problem I had that lead to fisheying was a contaminated roller. It was brand new, in plastic, I had used many from same batch before and I rolled them over the sticky side of 3M blue tape to clean just like always but it went bad. I now keep a piece of cardboard at hand and always first roll some paint on that with a new roller.

I use your blue tape trick every time I open a new roller. It works great!

Thank you; the trick came from the Boatwork Today channel on Youtube.
