Spring? It snowed on the weekend and there's more snow in the forecast here.

I've been in the shed. Lot of water in the ground from the melt and it's a quagmire right now. Picking up supplies, epoxy, wood flour, fiberglass etc. today so that'd definitely a good sign. Won't be long.

Rip Van Winkle is awake!

What a lousy start to the spring. Snow, rain, hail, sleet and more rain. The ground under the boat is soaked. It'll be awhile before it dries out enough to be able to walk on it.

I did manage to get into the shed this morning to fix an air leak in one of my air lines & make myself a new filleting tool.

Hey Rick I saw the nice fillet tool you made and will make one myself from something but can I ask, what do you apply the epoxy with in the first place before filleting?

I've tried a plastic bag with the corner cut off like cake decorating but that's a disaster. I don't have a lot of filleting to do but we live on board so I'm trying to keep any sanding to a minimum

Do you just scoop it out with a stick and slap it down?

Hey Warby.

No, I use the plastic bag trick. I got some extra heavy duty bags that work a lot better. I mix the goop right in the bag. Amazing how much less mess there is.

As for making the fillet I used a small plastic trowel with the end rounded off. It works Ok but I needed something bigger for the bottom/hull sides join etc. I'll know in a few days how my pool ball creation works.

I came down with a major case of 'LazyAssedNess' which has kept me out of the boat shed for awhile.

Anyhow, back at it yesterday and today getting stuff cleaned up & ready for more filleting & taping.

Couldn't find sh*t on my workbench so it was first up for cleaning & organizing!

Thanks Rick! It's the heavy duty plastive bags I need, the ones I've been using just split. There's hope for my fillets.

Filleted the joint between the hull sides and the bulwarks. One layer of tape over that, wet on wet. I don't think this joint needs more than one layer. It'll get a couple more when the decks go on plus it's a lapped joint that was securely glued.



Having to ease myself into this. Didn't take long for the carpal tunnel to start acting up again and I was only rolling out epoxy on the tape. Sheez. Wearing a back brace this year that appears to be working really well so far. Getting old suks!

Tomorrow I have a little work to do on the stem with the sander then I'll tape it up real good and tape in the thruster tube.

Anywho, I forced myself to haul my lazy ass out to the shed this morning. I have been puttering around in there. Little sanding here. Little taping there etc. Today's plan was to tape the stem. First chance to use the 'constant radius fillet tool' I made a few weeks ago.



I have to say it worked really well.

Have you ever tried puttying your tabbing, wet on wet? You can save yourself a lot of sanding and grinding work by filling the weave while it is still wet.

I keep a few different widths of finish cloth tabbing, to lay over the biax tab... and mop up the excess resin with it just by rolling it into the biax.

Then take a 4 inch chip brush and mayonnaise consistency 407 over the top, come back and lay it down slick with a plastic squeegee and blend the plywood 2-3 inches out up to the tabbing in one shot. The finish cloth covers up the biax and covers the weave. Normally 60-80 grit on an orbital dresses it out clean enough to be able to paint in one sanding...

If you've got a bad dart, or bubble, just cut the finish cloth shy of there and don't putty it... Sand out both sides, grind the bad spot... Lay in your cloth and float it with putty.

Another tip, is to come back after your fillets have kicked for 2-3 hours and take an acid brush with some mayonaise consistency made with fast hardener to fill any hollidays, then roll neat resin over the top with a foam 4 inch hot dog roller, once your mixing pot has kicked around the rim. If you get a good pull, you can amine wash it and then use red scotch bright to scuff it off... or 180-220 grit and move right to paint and primer.

I try my best not to grind any more tabbing than I have to...
