6-gallon hot water tank

Hi there!

We just discovered our hot water tank has bit the dust... leaking all over the place. My guess is she's as old as the boat - 1986.

We are shopping now for a new 6-gallon tank and wondered if anyone out there had any experience with refitting their tank?

We've found a Raritan: Raritan Water Heater

A Torrid: Torrid Marine Water Heater

And a SuperStor: Heat Transfer SuperStor Water Heater

Any advice or words of wisdom when picking out a new one? These specifically fit the space we have.

Choose the one that fits the old space the best. It's a pain to re-route plumbing and electric. A direct replacement would be best, since it's lasted 25 years.

Pick either the Raritan or Torrid. They are both glass lined which keeps the water from directly contacting the metal. The SuperStor has an aluminum tank. I don't think it would last as long and might impart a taste to the water. I'd go with the Raritan, but I'm a Raritan dealer. I'd be glad to quote you on a Raritan.

I've heard a few bad things about the superstor. But either of the other two look good..

I have an ISOTEMP which is stainless and I am very happy with it. Mine is 120 Volt plus one coil for heating from the engine. It is also available with a second coil if you have hot water heating on your boat. I heats up very quickly.

We have an Atlantic t-6 models with which we are quite happy, but they've apparently gone out of business.

Make sure to get a dual shorepower/heat exchanger bypass model. I would suggest that you'd need a pretty extravagant battery bank plus inverter to heat water otherwise, but I'm OK with the black bag, a sunny day, and the cockpit when that far offshore.

The Seaward (NOT the ss model) is the one originally installed in your boat. My PO installed a new one after 11 years. That one's been working for us for the past 14 years.

Hose replacement to HW heater w/ Hose Flix is a description of replacing the hoses from the engine.

If you click on Main Message Board and type "hot water heater" in the search box, there are tens of discussions about how our C34 skippers have replaced theirs with the different models available.

A "trick": you need to remove the door frame to get the old heater out.

If you get a Seaward replacement, make sure you determine if the hoses from the engine are front or rear connections. I find rear is easier to access from under the galley sink.

Go to your local DIY store and hunt around for a copper cylinder of the size you require, you need it to be fully insulated (sprayed on expanded polyurethane) and a bung to accept an electric immersion heater, when on shorepower,(use oncalloy immersion heater for all water types) and a indirect internal coil to connect to your engine to heat the water. A marine one was averaging £350 plus, the one from a local DIY store plumbing section ? £55 ! fitted in 1988 and still in service...if posible make sure the top of the tank is level with the engine to prevent thermal convection.

1985 Pearson 34. Replaced OEM 6 gallon Raritan ~5 years ago and am quite happy with it. OEM rusted out, they now have plastic outer shell instead of steel. Per previous post, replace with same makes re-plumbing much easier.
Very well insulated. Water still hot in the AM from running engine to anchor or moor.
