Yanmar 4JH3TE Exhaust Elbow

We just purchased a new to us boat with a 4JH3TE engine. The exhaust elbow looks like it has a small leak. I would like to go ahead and replace it as it will give us a known starting point engine hours wise for it. It looks like it is an aftermarket part. I can't seem to find where to order one. I have seen the Yanmar ones for about $800, but I have heard the aftermarket one are very much less costly. I can not find where to order an aftermarket one....please help me to locate where they can be ordered from.

I just finished, actually I am installing the new mixing elbow tomorrow, the same exercise on my 4JH2E. I talked to a lot of people about the Yanmar mixing elbow "issue."

Yanmar offers a $250 elbow for my 4JH2E that the Yanmar dealer wanted me to use. The problem was that, on our Caliber 40, the exhaust manifold outlet to the mixing elbow is only 5" above the water level in the water lift muffler. AYBC requires the bottom of the mixing elbow turn to be 10.5" ABOVE the water level.

The $550 Yanmar elbow for a 4JH2 engine (Yanmar Part # 12947013540) provides the necessary additional 5.5" rise so now the bottom of the U-turn in our mixing elbow is 11" above the waterline.

I talked with several local mechanics, welders, and machinists about a custom or semi-custom elbow. The cost, in every case, was far more than using the stock $550 Yanmar elbow.

Two Yanmar owners I talked to had custom stainless elbows installed to replace old leaking Yanmar elbows. They were pleased but spent way more than I did and their machinists did NOT expect those custom elbows to last any longer than the stock Yanmar elbow.

My elbow was not leaking but I did replace it after 20 years and 2,900 hours.

My Yanmar parts manual and factory service manual show the elbow I chose can be used on any 4JH2 engine, up to and including the TE.

I replaced mine on my 4jh3-te two years ago and bought a spare. Best price I found for OEM Yanmar was from Torresen. Paid a less than 500$. Local dealer wanted close to 900$.

Cabezone: I have an unused exhaust elbow from my new 2009 Yanmar 4JH4-TE 75hp motor. I had to fabricate a different elbow because my engine sat too far below waterline. It's available if you think it would fit:

I recommend you examine your installation carefully with an eye towards the actual waterline.. Many (most) installations with off the shelf elbows don't seem to have the specified rise.....

Wonder how many installs like that have resulted in premature deaths?

Ours was replaced at purchase nearly two years ago. The surveyor caught it and said his experience was 700 to 900 hours of life. We have put about 700 hours on the 4JH3TE and guess what?....It has a pin hole leak. It was the $750 source. After a lifetime of corrosion engineering, I think I will try fabricating out of another material, monel or C-276. Our installation requires the flange to be rotated anyways, so might as well build the whole thing. Anyone have experience with the aftermarket source for TE's?

When my new Yanmar was installed, I replaced my exhaust elbow utilizing a local SS fabricator. I doubt there is any aftermarket supplier that would have suitable dimensions to suit your particular engine/boat requirements. There are too many variables. A local fabricator, either working from your dimensions or his own measurements is the most efficient process. It wasn't cheap, $850, but it is vitally important to get the exhaust path above your waterline. It is a simple piece to make, any SS fabricator could do it.
