Yanmar 2QM20 drips from the impeller housing.

Please, gearheads out there, a little problem has me amused.

Perhaps someone can tell me how to fix the leaking coolant that is slowly dripping from a small rectangular slot on the bottom of the housing where the impeller resides. After renewing the impeller and gasket, there's a drop of coolant oozing out of the slot every 30 seconds. Why? And what is
the slot for?

In lieu of a repair manual, posing this question to those wiser in the world of
Yanmar heavy metal will surely be enlightening.

In advance, I kindly thank you.

The water seal is leaking. The slot is to allow water that drips past a bad seal to fall out before damaging the bearings.

Most bearing supply houses will have a new seal. Odds are the shaft might have a groove in it to. But a little emery cloth will sometimes fix that. Sleeving the shaft at that point is also an option if it's too worn

PC, the slot is to let the drips out! What has happened is the shaft seal on your pump has failed, and needs to be replaced. it isn't a difficult job, and if you source the replacement seal from a normal bearing supply house it will only cost a couple of bucks. From yanmar, a lot more!

I could describe the process, but maineSail has in his very good website done it with pictures and good advice. Go and have a look, and if you have further questions, come on back.

Oh... there have been many discussions about this sort of problem right here on CF, so a quick search would benefit you as well. Use the "custom Google search" feature under the general search tab at the top of the page...

If getting a new seal from a seal supplier the boot spring will most likely be mild steel and will rust. Take the boot spring off the old seal and use it if it's still OK or use a suitable sized rubber O ring instead.

coolant from raw water pump ? or do you mean water dripping, yes water drips from pump if seals fail or as stated shaft has worn, this is so water does not go into the engine oil system...

Re: Yanmar 2QM20 drips from the impeller housing.

I believe the opening at the pump bottom is to detect leakage. I am attaching a page from a Yanmar Workshop Manual for 2YM15. There may be differences for your engine.

Good Luck.
