Which way should the slots in my raw water face? On my 30 year old boat the slot in the basket face forward, but I have been told this is wrong and they should face aft since it is possible for water, when under sail, could be forced into the system and flood the engine when not running. Thoughts?

A hull strainer is usually mounted with the salot openings facing aft, so the blanc face presents to grass & etc, preventing it's ingress.

As pictured below, left aft & right forward.

and yes, water can be forced in a flood the engine. Don't ask me how I know for SURE, but I know.

Slots facing aft on my 30 y.o. Swedish boat. Seen them facing fore on a J-120 built in France though ....

Definitely aft for me.

I think it depends on what you consider more important. Forced flow or more resistance to clogging.

Mine are aft. I checked as soon as I bought the boat because it's capable of over 20 knots.

I think this one is right up there with which nut goes up against the propellor boss, jam or full nut.

The instructions for my watermaker advise to have the strainer facing forward so when you are underway it keeps from becoming air bound . All others on my boat are the other way
