Two Engines on One Filter - Possible ?

OK - so this might be the dumbest question ever, but here goes.

I have one 75 Gallon diesel tank which feeds :

Yanmar 4JH3TE via Racor Spin on type (R20)

7Kw Fischer Panda Genertor via Racor Spin on (R12)

Now, I would like to swap out the spin on filters for a DUAL Racor 500 setup, but the space where the filters are is pretty limited.

Now here's the question. If I eliminate the genny filter can I not feed it off the dual Racors ? Surely the flow rate would be enough ?

The flow rate would not be a problem. I would think it would be better to keep the systems separate in case you had a problem with one or the other but you could have valves to isolate them if need be. I like to keep the number of fittings downstream of the filters to a minimum to reduce the chance of air/fuel leaks, that would by my concern with running them both off one filter.

The panda fuel system is a complete loop to the tank, if the check valve in the little electric pump should leak , even a little, your main will pull air in and starve, shutting down at the most inopportune time. keep two filters, even though it is a pain, it's better than hitting a dock or something else.

As mentioned above, the issue has to do with only running one fuel pump at a time. You will need a check valve in the line for the other pump and if that leaks, then you can suck air through the return line of the other engine. I have seen systems plumbed this way and they had to install ball valves on each line and then diligently shut off the one that wasn't being used. Separate feeds will leave you happier in the long run.

Most manufacturers require their product to be installed completely separate other than sharing a fuel tank for warranty. There are also some other issues that can arise as listed by a previous posters.
