Unfortunatly, a starter can't handle that for long. If anyone ever finds the comutator segments thrown out, this "overruning" by the engine is what causes it.

I have a Perkins 4-108 and yes there is a spacer/plate between the starter and the engine housing.

I bought a new starter recently, at half the size and weight of the original and it spins twice as fast:

Made in Argentina and the price was 240 US D.
Had old starter overhauled and keep in onboard for a spare.

To get the Argentinian starter, contact East Coast Battery in Ft. Lauderdale..They have a www page.

Can't get to the model number, etc as I am sitting in a Hotel room in Kyrgystan right now and have been gone for 29 days...

Kyrgyzstan ?!?!? never heard of it. I thought I new most of the "?stans" but that's a new one. Where the heck are you? are you being held hostage? do you want us to make a raid to free you?

The reduction gear starter is great, indeed CSY Man. It spins more smoothly, weighs half as much and gives a little more space around the engine. Very nice stuff!

I’d never heard of Kyrgyzstan (41 00 N, 75 00 E) either. Evidently, it's bordered by Kazakhastan to the north, Uzbekistan to the west, Tajilistan to the southwest, and the PRC (Chima) to the southeast. Live and learn.

I hesitate to write this because it calls upon a hazy memory. When I worked at the Marine Trading Post, we carried the Lucas starter in stock. I vivdly remember an old timer diesel mechanic (named Floyd) telling me that the problem with those starters was that 99% of the people that installed them, didn't know that they had to be adjusted. I had never heard of such a thing ... shimming GM starters yes, but "adjusting" a diesel starter? FWIW ... Floyd was a living legend in Fort Myers, so I wouldn't discount this story.
