Second Guages for Perkins

I currently have a tach, water temp, and oil pressure for my 4-107 in my nav station below deck. I want to add the same three guages in my cockpit for obvious reasons, so adding to sets of these guages is it simple as jumping the sender wires to send info to the second set of guages? to complicate things my oil presure guage reads the pressure from a oil line to the back of the guage. the guages i have are stewart warner if it matters at all. thanks

Re: Second Guages for Perkins

The water temp is a voltage gauge so there would be no problem just putting two in parallel. The tach works off of pulses so again, no problem with paralleling them. You seemed to indicate that the oil pressure is a mechanical gauge so you would need to put a "T" in the line from the engine to the gauge and just run a line from the "T" to the other oil pressure gauge. Judicious use of some anti-chaffing tape/conduit or something to insure that a hole doesn't get rubbed in it would be a good idea.

Ain't nothing left to do but do it. Good luck.

You cannot use single gauge senders to operate dual gauges. You need dual gauge senders:
Dual Temperature Senders ➥ Temperature Senders - Stewart Warner
Dual Pressure Senders ➥ Pressure Senders - Stewart Warner

Re: Second Guages for Perkins

Gord's right, sorry for the inaccurate post. Must have been alcohol induced brain fart. The temperature gauge and the sending unit make up the total resistance in the circuit. If you were to try and parallel them the resistance of the gauges would only be half of what they were. You would need to either get the dual gauge (which is probably double the resistance) or add another sending unit to your block and then add another gauge.

Never doubt Gord. He's rarely incorrect.

Re: Second Guages for Perkins

that makes sense i guess piggy backing the wire would be too good to be true. i was looking over the motor and noticed my tach goes to a sender looking device with two wires. would be able to maybe run a different style tach that runs off the alternator? Any ideas where a good place to find senders for an old perkins diesel? thanks for the help guys.
