Rebuild or Repower?

As far being underpowered, I was a bit worried about that as most boats were delivered with a Perkins 4-108 or now a Yanmar 4JHE. I'll check it out if/when I buy her by deliberately motoring into the wind and current and see how she does. I'm not much into motor sailing and prefer running under power as little as possible.

I know the prop was replaced a few years and factory overhauled and rebalanced in 2009. So it's very possible it's a prop issue.

If possible it would worth checking prop and bottom for fouling. Specially if boat has been sitting for a while. When I bought my boat it had the original 36 hp Volvo had no problem doing 6.5-7 knits turning 2000-2200 rpm. So I would think you could easily do 5-5.5 knots. Once the boat gets going does not seem to much to keep her going. Also mine was around 26000 pounds when I had her hauled out no fuel or water on board and half of the boat striped.

Kevin, as has been said, check for a fouled prop. A dozen barnacles can cause the symptoms you are describing. Get the prop and bottom scrubbed and inspected for obvious blisters before you pay for a haul and survey. It doesnt take much to mess up a prop. Good Luck. _____Grant.

Yes...like mentioned above....dirty prop and bottom is the first place to start. If you are going to do sea trials, you want to make sure (and so should the owner) that the bottom be cleaned thoroughly.

Thanks guys! Sounds like I'm going swimming when I get down there. The boat hasn't been actively sailed since 2000 or really even used since 05. So it's very possible that's what it is.

I have just repowered my 44ft 19 ton sloop.
The old 1984 Yanmar 3HM35F was due for a rebuild but I bit the bullet and went for a new Yanmar JH5E. The difference is amazing. Not only faster boat speed and maneuverability but the confidence factor of a new engine is a delight.
My recommendation is repower if you can afford it.
