Rattle in Neutral

I have a 28 foot Legacy with a 315 Yanmar Diesel. Ran the boat on Sat. went about 7 Miles up the coast and stopped to watch an air show for about two hours. Started the boat to leave put in forward then neutral and heard a loud rattle. Back in gear rattle stops did it a few more time same think. Put bout in gear and left for home. No problems at all. Pulling into dock same thing happened when I took boat out of gear.

I am thinking it could be the damper plate. which is not usually bad to replace. very bad if it fails completely.

Not a vibration but like something loose.(rattle, spinning sound?) Seems to be coming from the bow side of engine.

Most likely the damper. Long periods of idling kills the splines in the plate and on the transmission input shaft

If its a Hurth box, and it DOESN'T rattle in nueutral, is when you have to worry.
