Question About Lift Pump . . .

I did a stupid...

I torqued down the bolt on my lift pump too hard and stripped the threads in the housing. So.... I've ordered a new lift pump, and I'll install it this Friday, if it actually arrives on schedule.

My engine is a Yanmar 3GM30F. I will replace the lift pump and the line between the pump and the secondary fuel filter. My question is this: Will I need to bleed the system before I start the engine, using the bleed screw on the secondary filter, or should I just install the pump and the line and crank the engine, hoping for the best?

The new pump will be filled with air after it is installed, and air will already have leaked into the lines while the old pump was being removed. The system should be bled.

Thanks, Jesse. I also noticed that there is a gasket that will need to be installed. Any tips on how best to do that?

install lift pump and gasket (clean the surface where the old gasket was). it can be tricky getting the bolts started. also install new copper washers on the new line. in this case i would bleed the line to the secondary filter or even to the fuel pump fitting if in doubt.

My lift pump is located on the stbd side of the engine where it can't be seen and must be maintained or replaced using the Braile system. So I apply gasket seal and gasket to the pump and allow enough time for it to adhere properly, then a light coat of grease or non hardening gasket sealer to the exposed gasket surface and then install it, this ensures easy removal without a mess to clean from the engine side next time.

That's exactly the kind of tip I was hoping for, Jesse. Thanks again. I have the same kind of pump placement. There is no way to see the mounting screws.
