Noisy Borg Warner

Could someone help quieten my whiny 4236 driven borg warner velvet drive, its drowns out engine noise at 1300-1400 revs. Its running on ATF and although its only noisy when in gear I don't believe its thrust bearing/washer/plate generated. Is there some majic baby food formula type thing that I can stick in there which will allow me to hear the satisfying perkins beat againn?

Boat is about 20 tons
Cheers

Probably not....they aren't that difficult to rebuild.....I think the company in Florida that has the rebuild kits is called TMI.

Good chance its the damper plate. If you replace it make sure you get a polyurethane one in place of the old spring type.

I replaced mine as one of four springs had broken and made one hell of a racket. You have to remove the transmission to see it as it is bolted to the flywheel.

It sounds like a classic damper plate problem, I just replaced mine on a Hurth gear. The manufacturer of the origional plate is company called Sachs. I purchased mine from a supplier in Seattle, Wa. call Mer Equipment: Marine Equipment, John Deere and Isuzu Generators, ZF Transmissions, Marine Engines, MER Equipment Seattle. Often the velvet drives have the same brand plates, the only way to know is to take off the gear and remove the plate, hopefully part numbers will still be visible. Inspect the plates springs for wear spots and shake the plate, if you hear rattles its a good chance the plate was the issue.

Good Luck,

CB

No, the only work done to it was the shaft being turned down and a oversized lip seal put in

I assume you are referring to the output shaft of the transmission?

If that was the case, did they replace the bearings in the transmission?
