Re: Marine grade or regular oil for old diesel?

Only thing I know in that trend is whatever Brand Oil you started with. Stick with it. Company I used to work for switched from Exxon to Shell, world wide. We replaced a lot of seals and did extra rebuilds (due to seal failure) in the following 3-4 months. Shell is good if you start with it stick with it. Please don't ask why the seals failed, I don't have a clue. The repair bill was massive. I could have comfortably retired on it.
Best wishes

That sounds wierd,
In my experience never had issues changing oil brands or from mineral to synthetic & back again over different vehicles, boats & types of engines.
Always thought it was a myth to stick to the same oil.
Not saying it didn't happen just saying it hasnt been an issue that I've experienced or heard of happening to anyone I know.

Re: Marine grade or regular oil for old diesel?

I use Shell Rotella T4. That's what is in the user manual and my ysb-8 is a 1978. Doesn't burn oil, starts every time and still only use .6 lt diesel per hr into waves and wind. And it drives the boat at 5.5 knots. It seems to like it, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Interesting unit.

-Do you use a roll of TP for the filter insert? Whatever insert you use, how many hours does it last?
-Is the oil on your dipstick routinely something like honey-colored or still black?

.
Our 855 Cummins has an on engine bypass filter in addition to the primary filter.
Nothing close to one micron but, when its time to change oil (250 hours) its still clear enough to see markings on dip stick

Re: Marine grade or regular oil for old diesel?

you can use anything, including cooking oil, as far as I'm concerned, if you change it regularly. (I know - its the internet and there IS someone out there who'll take this at face value - caveat emptor, you aint even an emptor, it's free...)
My point is - old engine = change the oil frequently, and, because you are changing it frequently, you can fairly safely experiment with different diesel rated oils. I've been unable to detect any difference between marine labelled oil and automotive labelled oil in my engine's running.

Auto verses marine labeling, price mark up. I'd like the stuff the semi trucker uses or the commercial boat uses.
