anyone have a good idea how to repair a cracked block or ever used a car block to replace a marine block i have a bayliner 2150 with a 305 engine

The block is not "Marine". The add ons are. The exhaust manifold,carburator (if you have one, etc.) are marine. It is important to know who's system was used to "Marinize" the engine (Mercruser,O.M.C.,etc.) so that any replacement parts are compatable

Sorry but you don't repair a cracked block. Contact a few engine manufacturers and get a price on a rebuild if you are trying to save money. This may be cheaper in the long run than trying to replace the current engine piece by piece. You don't know what might be wrong with the other parts on the engine, and the risers, etc. probably need replacing too. You also need to factor in the labor to do the replacement unless you can do that yourself. Good luck. Chuck

Generally, repairing a cracked block is considered a bad idea. It has been done in some circumstances but the life has not been great. A good resource for info on this subject is the dodge truck forums since some of the cummins 6bt blocks cracked in the years close to 2000. These were known as the "53" blocks after the casting number. Depending on the size of your crack, you may get some extra life out of repairing it or it may not be feasible. Regardless, it is unlikely to be a good long term reliable solution.

Welding a block can sometimes be done but is not a good solution. Welding cast iron is very difficult and requires special knowledge, it isn't like steel. In addition, you end up with stresses in the material which make it likely to crack again.

Another method that is popular on the cracked B series engines is lock and stitch. Basically, you stitch up the side of the block with a bunch of threaded inserts that self lock. I have no experience with the method but it supposed works reasonably well.

If you are mechanically inclined look into a 1/2 block , would not put any money into repairing existing block.
