In my area I would expect to pay anywhere from $15,000-$20,000 for a new installed engine.

call me

Irwinsailor:
Please call ME when you nead a good tradesman. I like your attitude.

Seriously, I'd expect something near or under $10K for a ±30 HP engine installation.

Edit: I'm seriously out of date on my costing ( last repower job 1998)

Gord

Wow, that is some real money.

How much does a good used 20-30 HP diesel engine cost? (not including installation) KG

Gord, I am a poor broke sailor so I do all my own work. I had the marina do two things for me and both times I was unhappy with the work and the price was double the quote. I know a guy that had his Volvo penta rebuilt that he has in a 38' Palmer Johnson and it cost him $15,000.

A used but overhauled Perkins 4-108 sells for about $4,500 here in Florida....
On the other hand a firend bought one recently that was "freshly" overhauled for $1,000 from an ad in the local boat trader.

One of those should be plenty of power for yer 36 fot boat.

Re-Power ?

Expect you’d be wanting to refit (upgrade) with something on the order of 20 to 30 H.P. Diesel (Yanmar 2GMF20 / 3GMF30 or the new 3YM20 / 3YM30 ?)
Considering the market value of these “economy” boats (all < $25K, & lots < $18K) - I could not justify spending the money on a new diesel (but read the re-power guide for an alternate viewpoint).

Could your current engine be saved?

Some reference reading:

THE BOATER'S GUIDE TO SUCCESSFUL RE-POWERING
http://www.marinedieseldirect.com/re...powerguide.htm

Yanmar Quotation Request:
http://www.marinedieseldirect.com/repower/yanmar.htm

Factory Spec’s:

Columbia 36 Manufactured by: Columbia Yacht Corporation (Costa Mesa, CA & Portsmouth, VA)
Displacement:12,000 lbs. (Mk. II - 13,200 lbs.) - Engine: 30 HP Atomic 4 Universal

Hughs-Columbia 36 (CC) Manufactured by: Hughes Boat Works Inc. (Huron Park, Ontario & Orangeville, Ontario)
Displacement: 15,500 LBS. - Engine: 22 HP3 Cyl. Diesel

However, I’ve seen them /w 13 to 18 HP Euro Engines (re-fits?).

Regards,
Gord

All-

The Columbia 36 I mentioned is no longer listed for sale on the website where I first saw it. The boat had no motor (and no interior, for that matter). It was listed for $3000. Quite a project for someone! Thanks for the replies. Kevin
