Decades ago, when I was servicing work boats in the GOM, I worked on a lot of OmniThrusters.
They used a Detroit engine driving a centrifugal pump that jetted water port or starboard for thrust.

I have never seen anything similar onboard a pleasure vessel but having access to the components was a good idea.
