Anyone have a manual for or familiar with a Ducati 286 diesel?

After 2 months of searching I finally discovered what engine I have. Now hopefully I will be able to learn something about it without blowing it up. The installation is somewhat of a hybrid. I think the original installation (Ferrymann sp?) included a heat exchanger for a hot water system. Therefore it took over a month before I discovered a second impeller that was causing the overheat. The main problem is, there is no manual for the engine and everything is exploratory surgery. I am sure it needs anodes replaced but where are they? That is just one of many items. Previous owner(s) ran 15w 40 when streight 40, 30 or 20 is specified for the 284. If anyone has any experience with this engine please, please, please get in touch with me. Thanks in advance.

Try searching for a DM286 - Results most likely in Italian.

Posted on Thursday, December 16, 2010 - 03:03 am: [wd2-860] ... is a Wisconsin Diesel Engine. It is the same as a Ducati Diesel but seems to have been assembled in the US in the 60's. You will probably find all the fixings are metric and the piston has the Italian word 'VOLANO'(flywheel) and a arrow on it. Fuel parts are Bosch and some parts are tha same as Lombardini engines. Dang! I've been riding Ducati motorcycles for years and didn't even know that they made a diesel.

If you go on internet you'll find a dealer in Wisconsin. Good luck!

I can only comment on the oil used but you will probably find the reason they recommended straight 30 or 40 oil is because that was all that was around when the engine was first produced. 15w-40 is a more advanced oil, flows easier( thereby getting to the bearings faster) when the engine is cold which is when most engine wear occurs, but still is the same viscosity when hot as the straight 40. Had the same recommendation for our 1980 Yanmar but I use 15w-40 currently & will probably go to 5w-50 when my current stock is finished as we have a lot of short runs just getting in & out of the marina.
