Re: Why Do Catamarans Motor Nearly 100%

My ambition now is to motor more than 100% of the time.

Thanks for reminding me....just went to the dock and started the engines. I'll leave 'em run all night to make up for the time we sailed today (shh, don't tell anyone). Can't let the average get below that 100% mark!

With two engines, it counts as 200% of the time compared to a mono.

It also seems we need to check our sense of humour to ensure we do not offend in the joke thread.

Wishing you all safe sailing...or, for you cat sailors, safe motoring...
Thanks, apology accepted, understood.

NO! I must say more 44' Cruising Cat!!

My heart is full to breaking at the aspirations that you have reached.

Not only have you proved that Cats sail to windward, thus shattering myths worldwide and breaking mono sailors hearts everywhere..... you now have set you sights on attempting to motor 100% of the time!

How lucky we are at CF to have mega achievers like you.

Meanwhile because of my love for multis, the best I could do was get an extra hull over the extra hull!!

excuse me-(sob!) I am just so choked up with pride. At this rate, sooner than expected, the costs associated with purchasing sails will be eliminated!!

What a legacy you leave us with. A real leader in the multi world!

(Disclaimer: written a few hours after motoring 2.5 hours down a calm inlet and appreciating the virtues and advantages of getting somewhere under power with no wind. The emotion is still high)

Really? A lot of charterers fly their national flags.
Please read earlier postings - many choose to motor for the reasons given in the earlier postings. Unless circumstances are stated the information does not really assist. You say the mistral was blowing and the boats were in a restricted area between islands and the mainland? Perhaps you have answered your own point? The cats were going upwind and the mono was headed downwind?
As Weavis as suggested - does it really matter what other boats do in this regard? (Beyond the environmental issues which I do not wish to debate).
At the end of the day, I know we sail whenever it is possible and if this happens to be far from anywhere - which is often the way - then we wait for the breeze to return if its possible. If this happens to be in a reefy area then we would rather motor to open water, I would also motor to a good anchorage if expecting poor weather but was currently becalmed. I'm not sure that this proves anything whatsoever besides that I care about safety and prefer to sail than motor, even if that means going slowly. Frankly, many liveaboard long term sailors that I know, mono or multi-hull, sail rather than motor as we do not have the same pressing criteria as people that are time restricted and also we do not wish to burn up precious diesel fuel.

If I can see a cat or tri not sailing - I can usually guess at what design/s it is. You see a lot of good boats sailing (multi and mono) and you see a lot of average boats sailing (multi and mono) stuffs me why people buy a sailing boat and then don't/can't sail?

I think my wife and I got the most likely answer to the original OP... we'd never considered that so many Cats around here might be in charter use, so it makes perfect sense that they'd be in a hurry to get from place to place.

My only personal experience sailing one, was on the Leopard four years ago at the boat show... So we were genuinely curious if all cats sailed similar to the Leopard. How else to find out unless we ask? Our friends on the Lagoon only reinforced this notion, by claiming that they rarely sail because their boat was "slow," as they put it.

This thread has renewed my interest in the Sunreef. 'Currently, happy with the Oyster, but.... Always looking.

A lot of my colleagues are wealthy, (unlike me). The other day I was in London, and was offered a ride to another clinic by a heart specialist who was going the same way. He was a smoker. As we sat in traffic in the Rolls, he tapped me on the arm and said "Hey! watch this!" and pushed a button for the full ash tray. it seated itself, made a whirring noise and opened again empty.

He was sat there smiling and happy with the display. I asked him where the ash and butts had gone. "Buggered if I know" he replied.

A lot of sailors boat owners are like that. They have not a clue how stuff works and care even less. They love the idea of a yacht, great for status and socialising and wonderful that all you have to do when out there is turn on the engine......... sails are a touch complicated.

Also as factor pointed out, there is a gravitation towards boats that are flash but not easy to operate.

If it was not for people the world would be boring....
