No, he's spent nearly nothing on it. Most of it was scavenged or donated.

Curious how it seems to resemble some sort of Civil War ironclad gunboat.

Plyclad. Should maybe have been named "Old Ply-sides". I had the same thought.

I won't say anything, or else people will accuse me of getting in the way of someone's dreams... Or maybe I'll just say that a dream is just that until you realise it, and neither Mr Xeno or ol' Hot Rod will ever do that. One day, though, a boat I've built will actually get me across an ocean! I just have the good sense to wait until I have the resources, rather than just going for it armed with a few bits of plywood!

Indeed! Sometimes I miss posts when reading threads, so credit where credit is due.

Certainly you can design and build your own boat. My 34ft cat was designed and built by an amateur and crossed oceans and still floating after 32 years.
He did build another from plans first, so the second one borrowed much from the first one. Generally you can 'overbuild' to be safe. The larger the vessel, the bigger penalty overbuilding incurs, and as they become bigger, the cost of professional help relative to the boat cost is not significant.

This guy built a huge boat as his first one, and used shed building material and techniques, and ignored all advice.

It's all relative -- I think I read that he spent all of his savings, and all or most of his mother's retirement savings. That may only amount to $20,000 but it still means there's nothing to fall back on if it fails and they don't get to live on the boat in the South Seas. There's a hard day of reckoning ahead.

Here's hoping that such industrious folks will find ways to improve their new vessel now that they are aboard.

The only way that thing is going to get to Hawaii in one piece is on a Dockwise Transport, delivered to Keehee Lagoon or similar destination.

I wonder what the onlookers were saying while the Spray sailed away. I hear it started as a derelict boat ashore.

I look forward to getting updates on an upstarts progress.

Folks made fun of old Charley ( not a NA ) but I hear his O/I was the best selling boat over 40' of all time.
