Re: spinnakers

We have been using mono symmetrical spinnakers on our cat since launch. They work just fine on the cat and can be found for very cheap on the used market. Strangely, we are able to sail up to 90 degrees AWA in flat seas and steady wind. We use a sock, which takes most of the drama out of dousing. We just bear off to about 160 AWA, let the tack go and haul it down. When apparent wind gets up around 20 knots or over, I run the sock downhaul through a snatch block on the bow and then back to a winch. This arrangement keeps me from levitating as I haul on the dousing line. We try to drop the main before using the spinnaker as we find it does not add any speed and usually adversely affects the set of the spinnaker. We have, in the past, used the main to blanket the spinnaker for dousing, but found that, often as not, it would suck the spinnaker back into the spreaders and cause a mess.

Re: spinnakers

Cherod, My boat is the new Maine Cat 38. DWL displacement is 6 tons.

Thinwater, I understand the bridal versus sprit point. I happen to have a sprit, so was planning to try it for the assymetrical, but I will not be surprised to find the bridal works nicely, especially for the deep running.

Second hand mono assymetric, 55' apparent, sailing faster than true windspeed.

Re: spinnakers

With respect to taking down the spinnaker as the wind rises with short handed crew, we tried a top-down furler on the asymmetric for a while, but with our particular setup it never worked as well as the sock.

To take it down, we found it easiest to oversheet it, then release the tack. This left the spinnaker streaming forward from the clew, but over the top of the trampoline where we were pulling down the sock, rather than streaming out in front of the boat, which is where it will be if you ease the sheet. For the smoothest takedown, one of us would pull down the sock, while the other eased the sheet as the sock came down. However you could also do it single handed as long as the sheet was eased just enough for the clew to be over the aft edge of the trampoline.

Re: spinnakers

The thing I liked about the sock is that it doubled as a bag. No need for a separate bag, and I could lower the sock through a bow hatch into the sail locker. Easy. A bagged sail would not fit in the locker.

Re: spinnakers

Used Moo hull spinnakers can be used on multihulls but, they may not be built strong enough. We design and build both. The multihull asymmetrical spinnakers, we build, have heavier nylon, double tapes and lines on all three sides, larger patches and larger corner rings. The 3D shapes are different as well.
The foot lengths also depend on the position of the sheet blocks aft.

thanks,, interesting, i guess that may be because of shock loadings,, may have to take them down a bit sooner..

Re: spinnakers

I allow a maximum AWS of around 12 knots on our spinnaker. After that, I'll either bear off or sock it.

If there's that much wind around we don't need the kite anyway.
