Single Hand a Tri?

Hi,
Just sold my Hartley, and in a few months I am retiring, packing my gear and driving from Perth , WA to Brisbane , Queensland to buy another yacht.
There seems to be a few trimarans I could afford, but I am wondering how practical they are to singlehand and live aboard ,on the anchor.

Presumably you will be living aboard at anchor in Qld? If so, shouldn't be too difficult although you might have to move around a bit.

I guess one of the things I want to know is what a tri is like on the anchor.

At the risk of derailing your thread, it might be like a cross between a cat and a mono.
Stable platform with only one living hull but good deck space but hey I am only guessing so I should butt out and let people with real time experience in .

Did a market appraisal today on a 38 foot Cross, tri. Guy who owns it has lived aboard single handed across the Pacific for the last three years. Just an average careful sailor on a sound, but certainly very inexpensive boat.

Have owned Dragonfly tris more than 10 years. In a word: stable.

Look for a model that has both amas in the water at anchor... For low drama amas.

For anchoring - yes the boat may "hunt" at anchor or sail back and forth, but if you use a bridle from one of the amas, that will be eliminated.

Don't get fooled into thinking you need less anchor though, much of the stress on an anchor is due to the windage of the boat, not the weight.

When I was younger I single handed tris a lot ! they are as easy as any to single hand if set up properly! and are very nice at anchor, at least the ones I sailed were, They were all 37 ft or longer. I always loved the room and the stable sailing. When I decided to bild my own boat I almost bilt a tri, but I wanted a steel boat so went with a mono !! In hindsite, I might still own a tri if I had went that way !! LOL Im still looking for a tri in GOOD shape ! no luck yet !! have fun Im sure you will injoy a Tri!

I am Currently Singlehandling my 37 Searunner. I have traveled from New Brunswick, Canada, All the way down the US east cost, Off shore, Coastal, and Intercoastal, over to the bahama's and down to the Exuma's. Anchoring was a breeze. Mind you a mechanical anchor winch is a benifit. I love how I can pull up to where i want to anchor or grab a mooring and have nice big wing decks to run up and drop anchor or grab a mooring line.. Easy!!

A bridal at anchor can help if you start to sway a bit.

IMHO an electric windass is essential when singlehanded if the boat is 30' or over.
