Yeah, what he said

We haven't "upgraded" to a sailboat yet -- still have the motoryacht and doing the inland rivers thing part-time.

This has been very interesting. So far about 275 people clicked on the this subject, but only 42 voted. This is about 15.2%.
Of these the vast majority own. I was actually expecting the opposite to be true. Perhaps the other 84.8% that chose not to cast a vote are the non boat owners.

It is possible that many readers are unable to answer yes to any of your questions. For instance, someone who is regular crew on someone elses racing boat may be quite happy with their lot. They would not be able to answer this poll. I can think of other examples.

In the sense of doing any long term cruising - more than a few weeks. Owning really is your only choice. You can't afford to charter for many months. Fractional ownership commonly tends to fall into 1 month or a bit more.

I guess what I am saying is I think the poll isn't the most well considered poll, though the topic is interesting hence many people came to look. The virtues of charter, fractional and full ownership has not been a topic well discussed more than in passing and I think would be a good idea for a discussion thread. There is a 4th option - Club membership that my wife and I did in our first year and was quite affordable without any of the work involved in ownership but a lot of time sailing. Not really an option for cruising any length of time though.

LOL it gets like that doesn't it? I'm building a cat full-time, trying to fix up our steel Roberts for sale, and doing up a little Bayliner in the odd spare second....... I know who owns who in my situation.

We own a small yarmouth 23 gaff rigged cutter but also crew for races on a larger boat - feeling 42 - and have taken holidays in Greece and the West Indies on chartered boats.

I too am a slave to my vessel. It is often a love/hate relationship, but in the end, I get sufficient pleasure to justify the pain

I do not think that the poll is wrong. I get about the same results in any poll that I have made. People just do not like to vote or not a member with this board.
