Haul and Elec Work in Ft. Lauderdale

Can anybody recommend a yard that can haul a 25' cat in the Ft. Lauderdale area other than at Dania Beach, and a good marine electrical shop? We'll need a short haul for survey but the boat is 220v and we'd like to have a 120v system installed as soon as possible before we leave for the Chesapeake. Just Catamarans is backed up and can't get to us for at least 2 months, so we need to find alternatives in order to put this all together. Thanks! — looking for recommendations.

LeeV, are you aware that going from 220v to 120v means replacing the alternating current wiring?

Might be a lot cheaper to buy a 120 charger for your batteries and use a 220 inverter for 220 appliances if you have them. No changes to the wiring circuit with this approach.

Not all electrical conversions require all new wiring. Sometimes the wire gauge is sufficient from the factory.

Agreed, if you halve the voltage you need to double the amps to carry the same power (watt). And for double the amps you need to double the wire size.

I had an Alden 54 that I took to Europe for a year, it was a 120V boat and everything there was 220V. I put a transformer in the boat in Gibraltar, just after the shore power plug. it worked fine with no trouble, even though the boat was 60hz and most power there were 50hz.

It also works as an isolation transformer.

Complete Marine in Pompano has a travel lift and a pretty good electrical guy. You can stay on your boat while the work is being done.

Hold on to your wallet at any yard in Ft. Lauderdale.... they all want to work on mega yachts.... not 25 footers. You should see the disappointed looks on their faces when I pull up with my 35 year old Watkins 29.

All true: An expensive town to maintain toy boats.
Sail North to Fort Pierce and find better deals.
I had boats in Fort Lauderdale for 20 years, paid my dues and my bills, then some.

Yep. We’re not going from one to the other; we’re adding a 120v stand alone system.
