I just figured with all this encouragement we might be able to convert you. After all, it IS the next logical step. An $2 mil. Hell, that's just pocket change. Right

Hi Slap,

I can tell you have never taken a long trip on a cat we will leave the rough seas bit out for now as that would be really unfair to the things. Yes on anchor and in marinas ( which is what they were / are built for) they may rule, though some with taste may disagree with that statement... but they do not work to windward on a good day much less a day with some breeze and sea running, Just an excuse to put sails on a house boat if you ask me... oh , and charge a lot for doing so.

If you want two boats, then why not just buy two real boats and be done with it?

All in fun maties all in fun says he laughing

I have to weigh in on the steering question. Even with older cats, you're disconnected from the feel of the boat. I too like the feel of a tiller on a well balanced mono. Having said that, there's no way that out weighs a cat's benefits.

I assure you, there's no mono in my future .. Now...a larger cat? Probably..

I wonder if Michael Fay was laughing about the windward abilities of cats in 1988?

The 1988 America’s Cup races: 7 to 9 September 1988 off San Diego, California.
Best two out of three races.

Stars & Stripes
raced against the huge 90 feet mono-hull challenger New Zealand KZ-1

Races: two sailed.

Race Course:
Alternate courses
First race 40 nautical miles long, one windward leg (20 miles) and return.
Second race 39 nautical miles, triangular course (13 miles by leg, first windward, two and three reaching leg).

Results:

Stars & Stripes beat New Zealand KZ-1 by two wins to nil!

- 7 September 1988, 1st race. Wind speed: 7 to 9 knots. Stars & Stripes beat New Zealand by 18 minutes and 15 sec.

- 9 September 1988, 2nd race. Wind speed: 6 to 15 knots. Stars & Stripes beat New Zealand by 21 minutes and 10 sec.

Beaten by 18 minutes in a 40mile windward-leeward race.... that's a serious ass kicking.

Beware of the spinners of tales calling multihulls the dark side. (After all, once you get rid of all that lead or whatever ballast, the multihull is clearly on the light side.)

Although they may not know of which they speak, I certainly admire their courage. Imagine, sailing the blue seas in a vessel capable of sinking to the bottom like a rock. Most only have one engine and rudder, choosing not to carry a spare, all set up and ready to go. No wonder they live deep down in the cabins where they can't see the dangers which lurk.

I think his catamaran envy is rather apparent. Cheer up mate one day you'll own a full boat and forget all about 1/2 boats.

Keep it light. No reason to throw mud. Monos and multis both have their place. For each individual cruiser there is a perfect boat.
For my wife and I, a multi is the best solution due to her neck problem. Living life at 15 degrees is not an option. OTOH, if I was cruising by myself, a small mono would be my first choice. Heavy, wood, cutter rigged.
The fact is, there are as many designs of boats as there are sailors to sail them. The boat that is right for me, would probably not be right for you.
So, why don't we stop picking on other people's boats, and talk about how great our own boats are for our needs.
My old, heavy, slow trimaran is about to get some new components that are unconventional, and would probably make most boat builders cringe.
That pilot house I added, I built doors. I can't get them to seal. So, I am going to pick up some exit doors from a Peterbilt sleeper. They will fit. They will seal, and they will meet my needs.
For the interior, I gave up on the dinette, and setee, and am installing 4 pedastal chairs. May sound odd, and the million dollor yacht crowd is probably thinking trailer trash, but my wife now feels like there is more room in the boat. That is worth allot.
I have liked all of my boats. Not because they were monos or multis, but because they suited my needs.
As for better? My boat is better for me than your boat. As your boat is better for you than my boat.
Oh, and Chris, I still have to agree that would be a step up from the Challenger, but, not sure it is a 2 million dollar improvement

Ludite definition of Ludite in the Free Online Encyclopedia.
Luddite

An individual who is against technological change. Luddite comes from Englishman Ned Lud, who rose up against his employer in the late 1700s. Subsequently, "Luddites" emerged in other companies to protest and even destroy new machinery that would put them out of a job. A neo-Luddite is a Luddite in the Internet age.
How did that work out for you H/V Vega?

Did you save the world from technology?

Dave
