If you do go ahead I suggest that you have a good hard think about having all the halyards at the mast or at least the main . Our Outremer had a 2to 1 main halyard run back to the cockpit which meant that I had a 140 foot coil of rope to deal with and because it had to be lead aft and the friction was such that you had to use the electric winch which was very slow. Our boat has bat cars so I tried hauling at mast by hand and was surprised how easy it was,if I am feeling energetic I can hoist all the way up . I waited a year before shortening the halyard just in case . Much less spaghetti in the cockpit now . Fyi I am 57 and no great specimen

Thanks, great points. I worked some of the halyards and lines on the boat and overall I thought the running rigging was OK. They are long leads coming down the mast, going through 4 turning blocks to get to the winches and stoppers, so there is a lot there to cause friction. But they were well organized, easy to get to from both helms, and you could see what you were doing. A bit more complex than an FP for example. Again, trade offs are always in play. I would take this for the better helm positions. But your point is good regarding moving what you can to the mast. Spin halyards for sure and reefing lines perhaps.

after sailing on Lake Ontario for most of my life it was quite an eye opener to sail in the tradewinds. So consequently my wife and have quickly become adept at reefing .As discussed the main halyard is at the mast but the single line reefing is in the cockpit .After depowering I adjust the halyard while she uses the electric winch to take up the slack. This works very well .Being at the mast gives me a good view of the reef is coming in. I was not looking for electric winches but with things like reefing the can move a lot of unloaded rope quickly.
The other advantage of taking the halyards forward is that it frees up space for the control lines that you will want for the self tacking jib . It looks exactly like the one on my Outremer 45 . In General it works but when you start to use it in situations other than up wind you may find it lacking .I am adding control lines this year.
If you buy where would you take it

Good points David. I had a self tacking Jib on my Hanse and you must have car control or it gybes with much force and without control when sailing at deep angles. I pointed this out to the factory reps. On my Hanse I would go forward and slide the windward car stop over to hold it in place.

Wow thats ugly. I mean, beaten with the ugly stick and then beaten with it again. And Heavy - 20 tonne. Unless I am missing something it has an absence of redeeming features.

We met predecessor last year in the Mediterranean. Kids were deeply frightened.

It would be a slower alone but manageable. The key is pre setting the halyard and then taking in the reef. Getting the tensions correct would require a couple of trips back and forth but it would only a few minutes. By nature I am a racer but when cruising I do not worry about doing things at America's Cup speeds I live by the adage "reef when the thought first comes to you". Luckily my wife enjoys sailing so I am not on my own.

Well I'm new to design considerations, can you tell me what makes a 'good looking' cat? I looked around it at the show and thought some of the design features were very innovative.
