Dock side appeal of three cats

Which of these three cats has the most dock side appeal to you.

Freydis 46

Lagoon 47 (1st version)

Catana 471

Which do you like in order for the exterior design
1.
2.
3.

The price range is quite different for the three so leave price out.

Re: Dock side appeal of three cats

Can you elaborate on your meaning of dockside appeal? Does that mean how she would look at the dock or the amount of accommodations and shoreside comforts she would have? As far as aesthetics, I think they are all sleek good looking boats.

Freydis - then reasonable gap to
Catana - then less of a gap to
Lagoon

I guess I mean how they look and maybe cockpit layout.

I like all three (in no order)for these reasons:

Lagoon- side profile, cockpit size, helm position, galley down, overall interior.

Freydis- bows, forward crossbeam, sail area, performance.

471- overall interior, dagger boards, sail area, performance, cockpit.

If I had to choose, and I am going to choose. I think I would go for the Lagoon. I am just not sure I can get the performance up to what I want. Square top main and mast head upwind code zero would be on the list. And yet I keep coming back to the Freydis. Smaller than the Lagoon but better performance. I believe same build quality and materials ( polyester).

Does anyone know the real build story of the Lagoon from the early 90'. From what I can find JTA was building race multihulls and then started Lagoons. Some people list foam core in the hulls and balsa deck, maybe some carbon in the beams. Who knows??

The 471 is nice good performance and build quality, but price to over come.

If it's an earlier TPI Lagoon it's all balsa core. That's not bad if it's well maintained. I would go with the Freydis, but I'm a sucker for LeRouge Designs.

The TPI boats where balsa for sure. Which is fine I have a J40 now, built by TPI and it is rock solid.

The 47 was built in France for sure. I don't know what the story was over there.

Yep, that is how I would rank "dockside appeal".

If I was to actually take off cruising in one, it would be Catana, then less of a gap to Freydis, then a reasonable gap to Lagoon.

But really, of all possible things you could ask the interweb opinion on, why would "dockside appeal" even come up??? Isn't that completely a personal preference?

Re: Dock side appeal of three cats

Maybe Dock side appeal is the wrong term. You have to like the look of the boat when you look at it. What is the appeal with the Freydis? I am not not knocking just curious. I have not been on a Freydis, but it seems smaller from pictures than the others.

Don't know and can't analyze it - Lerouge designs just do something for me.

You didn't ask about size or volume - just looks.

Fair enough the sharp bows of the Fredis are great.

Appeal? All that matters is what you think.

Re: Dock side appeal of three cats

So subjective isn't it? What is sexier an Aston Martin, Lambo, or Ferrari ?

I like the performance of a boat as being my number one criteria. So after crunching the Bruce numbers I lean that way. If u want a floating condo then we are talking a different situation. I was surprised u didn't mention Outremers also ! Any particular reason why not? How about Chris White Atlantic Cats? So many boats...so little money! smile.

Also, there are a lot of used boats looking for new homes. I swear to u by Scouts Honor that u will and can get a better used boat than trying to buy a new boat. Everything worked out and implemented. That depreciation curve over 5 years is vomit induction turbine

Re: Dock side appeal of three cats

Neither of the 3 boats the OP listed have been made in many years, so I assume he is set on a used boat. Also, I wouldn't put any of them in the "floating condo" category, compared to what that generally means in more current boats.
