Discount on New Boats?

What sort of discount off the list price of a new boat should we be looking for?

I know that there are 'boat show' deals, and have heard of someone claiming to have got 50% off a new Hanse list, but what have people actually negotiated?

Specifically we are looking at cats - discount on new Lagoon 380?

Please feel free to PM me if you don't want to say in open forum but don't mind sharing.

Re: Discount on New Boats?

I was told that usually the dealer will share his 15% commission. So negotiation starts at 8 %.

On options negotiation starts at 25% as these can often be installed later at far better prices.

Only hear say.

15% commission! Wow - I need to change dealerships.

Don't know about anyone else, but I can tell you our new boat prices for the year, no negotiation no boat show specials. Call us old fashioned, but we price the production for the year and thats that.

Re: Discount on New Boats?

All two boats I've purchased directly from the manufacturerer did not entertain discounts. Perhaps a dealer will negotiate an adjustment to his markup.

Re: Discount on New Boats?

I'm glad Seawind is doing so well they don't need to negotiate - seriously, I'm not being sarcastic there - but I think the global market may be a bit different.

Have a look at Group Beneteau's recent results - they had a Euro40m operating loss for the first half of the year, driven primarily by reduced boat sales (in french online, but here's a translation of the key part of their half-year numbers from 2012-4-27):

"Degradation of operating income [in the Boat business] ( -€ 48.4 million against - € 10.7 million over the same period of 2010 to 2011) is mainly due to sharp decline in volumes in the European market, especially in southern Europe. This volume decline has also led to price pressure. Those negative factors could not be offset by growth in new markets."

Margin compression is a fact of the current global economy, and as a cash buyer who is happy to shop around, I'm looking to hear from others who have bought boats recently (I don't think pre-2008 comparisons apply anymore).

I guess a key question is what is the dealer/broker markup/commission? I'll be asking the dealers I'm dealing with and will expect to have a forthright conversation about that. I don't want to fleece anyone and expect them to get paid a fair amount for the work involved with my sale, but I'm also sure that a sale and $$ from the commission is better (for them and the manufacturer) than no sale at all.

For me - getting the best deal possible will help mitigate the resale risk that next year's model will be discounted to less than I paid for this years & the bottom falls out of the market (which is something the dealers can't control, but getting some commission revenue this year is).

That being said - I'm certainly not going to pay 50-100% markups on retail pricing for add-ons. It's pretty easy if you spend the time to find direct price comparisons for most components retail, a little bit harder but not impossible to find wholesale + labour estimates - there are plenty of places in Europe that would love to get the business and aren't shy about saying so. A shop as big as Beneteau should be passing along more of the economies of scale than their list prices indicate.

Happy to respond here - I dont want to turn this thread into a Seawind Ad though. Perhaps I should simply direct you to the Seawind Website?

There is a spec sheet for the 950 which I can send to interetsed parties, again though probably more kosher if I do that offline, not trying to hide anything at all, just dont want to offend anyone's sensibilities

950 Info
