destroyed cat

I lost my cat in the hurricane Michael
Posted in general sailing

The boat was in Panama city marina and is upsidedown with the bows up on the board walk.
I did have insurance but really did not cover what I had in the boat
Pics can be seen by looking at post on hurricane Michael

Sorry to hear that. Good luck with your recovery efforts.

Re: destroyed cat

I see a cat with blue hulls on the boardwalk but it's right side up. Is that yours?

Total bummer, at least you weren't on her.

Man that really blows. I can't imagine what that storm surge looked like in order to flip over a cat in a marina. Let us know how everything works out with insurance.

Lots of windage (155mph winds) and built lightwieght with no real keel. Wind picked her up and flipped like a playing card.

I can't believe the boats in the background that didn't remove their sails before the storm

Re: destroyed cat

It's upside down, but there's no indication it's wrecked. If it's all in one piece, you'll just have to do some cleaning, and replacing equipment and wiring. The engines should be fine if you can get it out of the water soon. If your not interested in doing the work, you should be able to sell it fairly easily. If you can't, send me a note, and I'll take a look at it myself.

Cheers.
Paul.

Re: destroyed cat

Grit, I'll bet the insurance co writes it off so you'll be dealing with them. Here's another view if that is his boat. It's the same one I referenced earlier as being right side up but that pic was not clear.

Would it had made a difference?

My boat is in Norfolk VA, 5 hours one way trip. I’ve taken down the sails twice in the last 30 days for a hurricane/storm that did not materialize.

Re: destroyed cat

No in those two boats it wouldn't but generally the first rule of hurricane prep is take down the sails.

It's a drag, but it's also a drag to come back to a boat with a shredded headsail, or the windage was so great your boat got blown off the dock. If you're by yourself, maybe you can snag someone on the dock long enough to lend a hand with taking them down.

Sometimes I wonder why people in hurricane-prone areas don't routinely remove the sails for the season when they don't often use the boat, just like in freezing places, boats are hauled for the winter. Seems like it would be cheap insurance.

Re: destroyed cat

I’m not positive about this, but I believe if Geico totals your boat they have to give you first dibs on purchasing her back, of course that would be with a salvage title. I’m sure there is a ton of water damage but in my opinion the Leopards are pretty robust boats structurally.

Re: destroyed cat

First, my stomach turned reading your original post. I'm so sorry your cat got wrecked. Mine got wrecked, but not totaled in a previous hurricane. I didn't have insurance.

If yours is totaled, could I buy tons of stuff off her?

I need pretty much everything.
