Advice for new owners from Australia coming to Europe to collect a boat

Yes to sail numbers and I have been told on the stern of the boat. I thought we would take numbers pre done and do when we get there. Any good quality sign writer will do for you. I spoke to a marine signwriter and he said he has been done lots.

Your MMSI number needs to be registered to the country you are from. We didn't try and register outside of Australia, but have purchased all our gear in England so just let the sales team know the number to program before they send equipment out to us.
Once your boat is registered the process can be done online and is very quick only a couple of days. We spoke directly with Linda Berryman from AMSA and she was extremely helpful.

I'm not 100% sure about these now after reading up on things. And I've never heard of them being on the stern of the boat? I thought the point of sail numbers was for easy identification (as they are large numbers on the sail)?

Still trying to learn more but they seem more for racing than cruising. As we're going to be doing the ARC rally I'm going to check with them also so will report back.

in the shipping channel by an irate skipper

Just to let you know that I we have a temporary MMSI number whilst our boat is having sea trials and remains under yard ownership. We are yet to have full ownership transferred over until everything is completely finished including moving the boat from La Rochelle to Canet.

the official number 'ON' needs to be displayed on the transom in 100mm high contrasting block letters, along with the LOA and beam and vessels name.
You won't receive the ON until you apply for registration.
The builders certificate is usually supplied by the builder at handover.
This will need to be couriered to AMSA before they register the vessel. This can cause a weeks delay between handover and sailing.
You will need a radio operators licence to receive an MMSI number. Then you can access the website that allows you to update the vessel details with other items such as ships DSC radio, EPIRB and AIS.
Its worth checking your AIS tranciever details and taking a cable and relevant software so you can input the MMSI yourself. Occasionally they can bug ind its handy to be able to fix it yourself on board. Also some, like the Raymarine AIS 650 can plug directly to the laptop to show AIS targets on OpenCPN which is very handy (using a mini usb to usb connector)

So an update on travel insurance..

Got a great quote back from 'World Nomads'. Under their level 2 they cover sailing in internal waters + you can have full cover for 12 months at a time.

Came back about 1/4 of the others I could find so we're going with them.

Greetings all you looming importers...

Doing some tidying up here, we just decided we may as well sell our Navionics chart card for the Mediterranean and Black Sea as we're unlikely to be in those areas again on our vessel. The card was new in 2011 and it's been back in in its original case ever since we left the Med. The complete description on the card label is "Medit & Black Sea Gold/XL9 CF CF/23XG V05.21"

As near as we can tell, the same card is available (eBay et.al.) for ~A$200, but we're open to any reasonable offer...and of course it'd be very easy to ship anywhere.

So...anyone with Navionics-compatible navigation hardware -- Ours is Raymarine -- out there interested in a Mediterranean chart card??

Hi there have just got a quote from Pantanius for cruising Med region. Based on value of boat it is 2.10% of value. I had been told to expect 1.5% to 1.8% wondered what others are paying for Med insurance.

Now a dumb question but does a Raymarine card work in Garmin products?

I think you will find pantanius the cheapest for the Med, but Topsail may be better for other ares. I spoke to an owner that hit a container off Italy this year and Pantanius were looking after him and the repairs very well.

deductable is the excess. premium is the annual fee. You can reduce the excess if you like but pay a higher premium. I like to leave it high as it is more economical unless you plan on having more than one claim/year
