We are intending using winter here to upgrade many area's on our boat. We love running with a 'Wing a Wing" arrangement putting a preventer on the main and sitting back.

That's fine but our boom is very large as it's a 'PRO-FURL' in boom furler so we cannot risk an uncontrolled jibe

1)To this end we shall get an almost identical jib (just higher cut to clear rails) made up and run it forward of the existing roller jib.

Then we will fit two poles so we can set and almost forget them. We like the idea as we can shadow it behind the roller jib to drop it then reef the existing jib if we need further reduction.

Has anyone done similar?

We do it an even easier way than that. Run two genoas on the same furling gear, same halyard, and roll them together.

Didn't bother with poles either although they would have made it work better once the wind was forward of 150 apparent. Until that point both sails would stay filled without using poles.

If, heaven forbid, the wind came round even more forward, we just pulled them both out on the same side. That worked just fine as well.

Used this rig on a circumnavigation so we have lots of experience using it.

That's thinking out of the square, we will opt for poles as well for sure.

Got my eye on a mostly finished 46 - can't say much more than that, don't want people knowing about it as it's a really good deal.

NS Sherlock. To be precise though its longer than 10 metres - just cause the french and south africans overstate their lengths doesnt mean everyone does.

But tell me mate, does the sail type magically change at 12 metres.

Now you are just being insulting and incorrect - its not 10.5 and its not a weekender, they have sailed half way round the world, , all over the South pacific, NA to Japan and back, hardly a weekender. whats your problem.

But to the point - is there a difference in necessary sails from 10.85 metre to 12.1? (A bow sprit will go on this year I think, that will make me 11.9 - am I allowed to comment then) I haven't picked it up, but I've only done about 30,000 blue water miles on multis.

And you know what - your logic goes something like the Op said 40foot, so according to you me with my 35 footer shouldnt have an opinion, so where do you with your no footer fit in?

Jeannius - sounds like a clever idea. Any issues furling it, I assume the extra thickness might stiffen it up a bit?

We like using the Twizzle or also knkown as the Twistle rig for going down wind. One of the main benefits is that it dampens rolling when going deep downwind, not a problem you would have on a cat.

We have two stays so rig it as such, but with a single stay you can either use a 2 slotted foil or you can make a sail with to sails stitched into a luff tape.

Once it is too windy for us to comfortably fly our kite, or at night time we put up these sails and then furl down as appropriate...

SInce you dont need dampening effects you wont need to design and buuild the special rig for the poles. really all you would be doing is either getting a twin slor foil for your headsail furler or having a sail made up new specifically with a single luff tape and two sails stitched to it.
