Yacht Facilities Nevis

I have kept my First 38 in Virgin Gorda for 15 years and want to move. Does Nevis have a yacht repair facility of merit? Where is (are) it (they). Are there harbors that can accomodate a 38ft. monohull?
Thanks for any info.

Re: Yacht Facilities Nevis

Hi, browney.

I kept my IP 380 on a mooring here on Nevis for a couple of years, and one of the issues was the lack of any kind of support facilities. It's pretty much do-it-yourself, and you have to get parts shipped in from St Maarten (Budget Marine or Island Waterworld), or sail up there to find competent marine tradespeople.

St. Kitts now has a boatyard but I'm not aware of any substantial maintenance or repair services there. They will haul your boat and place it in a tire-lined pit for tropical storm season. CF member PyotrBee lives on St Kitts and owns a catamaran, so he could comment on what it's like to own a boat there from experience.

The anchorages on Nevis are all open roadsteads. The government installed 100 helix-anchored moorings about four years ago, and they're available for rent by transients or long-term users. The anchorages on St Kitts are fairly exposed as well. Nevis is a great place to live, but owning a boat here has it's challenges.

Why Nevis? Sint maarten has every facility you could need, an international airport, American-style groceries, and you can anchor on the French side of the Lagoon for free.

Re: Yacht Facilities Nevis

St. Kitts does have a pretty well protected marina in Basseterre. Pretty safe too. No other redeeming features. We hid there for 3 days from high winds last winter - St. Kitts was fun to explore and the boat was safe but it wasnt what I would call a garden spot.
