12V 16 GPH Spectra water maker

Spectra tells us "the more more you use the Spectra the better it works and the longer it lasts" so we use all the water we make each day. We have enough solar capacity to make water, run reefer compressor, charge batteries simultaneously so run the water maker several hours a day and run it continuously while motoring.

When the watermaker is broken we get by on about 4 gallons a day

Really? Each of you get by with one quart of water each day? Sometimes using up to 1/2 gallon each? You aren't even achieving the "survival conditions" catagory.

I'm not judging you - just as curious about your usage as I was Impi's.

Like my surprise on the other posting - this is barely into the "survival conditions" category.

I personally drink that amount each day.

Is this becoming an ascetic bragging contest?

OK, apparently many of you are subsisting at or below "survival conditions". I will take you for your word and believe you are clean, healthy and not thirsty.

Perhaps "survival conditions" mean something else around the world.

One more thing - is the amount/day used really shared among 2 people, or did you mean that per person?

Our water tanks were above the ballast on our W32. The floor boards swelled up and wouldn't come up to switch between the tanks. Sailed to the Marquesas which took over 21days, hung out in Atuona for 4-5 days but too much rain so boat didn't dry out. Sailed around the Island to Hana Menu on the Leeward side and anchored in dry weather for another week before we could get the floor boards up. Still had water in the 40 gallon tank we left San Diego with.

We didn't scrimp on water but took advantage of frequent rain clouds to shower.
Washed in fresh water and rinsed in salt water, soon lost any compulsion or need for a freshwater washdown. Turned off the pressure water system and used foot pumps which cut down on water wastage big time. .

-75g/285L in hull/bilge tank, 40g/150L in stored containers = 115g/435L
-2g/7.6L per person.
-so far at the docks but since I do not have scuppers and only deck drains, I want to convert my deck to a catchment system. I've seen this and an incredible amount of water can be collected. If RO units ever come down for the common folk, I wouldn't mind doing that either.

This is from our two years cruising in the eastern Caribbean...

15 gpd (57 lpd) -- includes VacuFlush toilet with fresh water flushing.
We purchased water at dock & collected some rainwater off the deck.

We never had trouble finding water except in the Spanish Virgins. Luckily friends anchored with us had a watermaker, so we traded a bottle of wine for 30 gallons of water.

I can only speak to my first long passage. 2 people, 40 gallons,1 gallon per day. Did a little bit of rain catching, but not much. This was a 22 day passage to the Marquesas, in an engineless 26 foot boat. We were very,very conservative on water usage, since we had no idea how long the passage would take. Had a great passage, but I suffered from dehydration towards the end of the trip. I was never that conservative, or worried about water use after that lesson. _____Grant.
