Survey and Delivery Advice

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum. Our offer just got accepted for a 1986 Tartan 28 in Escanaba, Michigan. Does anyone know a good surveyor in that region? Also, we are contemplating the best way to get the boat from Escanaba to Cleveland, Ohio. We're thinking it would be better for the boat to sail it rather than truck it but we're not familiar with the route and a little leary of trying to pull it off ourselves. Does anyone have any experience with or recommend a delivery captain? We'd like to be on the boat too, just with some backup in case we need it.

Thanks in advance,

Katie

Can't help with a surveyor, but as far as moving it- that's a haul from there, especially with crazy spring weather. I always think its better to sail, but from there, the way quicker/easier/cheaper way may be to have it trucked down.

BTW, off topic, where are you keeping her in Cleveland?

That's up in the air at the moment too. Our most likely candidates are Edgewater Yacht Club, Whiskey Island or Spitzer in Lorain.

Welcome aboard Katie! Boatman61, on here, is a well known delivery captain. Drop him a PM and see if you can negotiate a deal with him. Most Old Salts, on here, know him well. Let's know about your progress. Mauritz

Not sure if you heard, but Edgewater is closed this year(never got rebuilt in time after Sandy)- unless the Yacht Club is separate than the regular marina? .. We are at Spitzer's and can highly recommend it.

I would second Boatman61, kind of 'inland' for him, but the Lakes can pretend they are oceans at times...

Good luck, and enjoy!!

I think the yacht club is open but the marina is not. Last time we were at Whiskey Island (a few weeks ago) it wasn't quite put back together yet either. We stopped by Spitzer last fall and it looked really nice. It's a little farther away than we'd like but it's very possible we could end up there. Maybe we'll see you on the lake!

It is out there a bit- we actually live in Chagrin, and its about an hr-ish for us. The nice thing is, there is no running home for stuff (like people that live close to the boat)..we are 'away'..period...

Also, for day/one overnight trips to/from the islands, do-able from Lorain, not so much from Cleveland.

Any questions, feel free to reach out. Happy to help.

Re: Survey and Delivery Advice

Escanaba to Cleveland is a long trip on an untested older boat.
Lake Huron can also get nasty and there aren't to many ports to pull into if you get into trouble. With that said it would be a great sailing trip. Have you though about sailing to Michigan City and trucking it to Cleveland?

I think my travel costs would make trucking overland an attractive proposition... a 28ftr should present no problems.

Re: Survey and Delivery Advice

Is there any way to estimate trucking cost? Just as a place to start on costing out a possible purchase. I know this is a very open question, possibly with way too many variables. But is there any round about price per foot cost?

Disappointing news - we had a verbal agreement, contract and deposit check in the mail and we just got a call from the guy saying he sold the boat to another buyer.

Bad luck.

but keep reading this forum and you will find that there is another boat out there for you. Maybe even a better deal. Treat this as a great learing experience.

I deliver boats regularly, but this one you would be better off trucking it. Just my Humble opinion
