Seeking Other Herreshoff Cat Ketch Owners

Would like to share information, especially related to carbon fiber mast removal for trucking the boat. Thanks, Roger

Hi Roger,
Look me up as I have a 33 Herreshoff cat ketch with carbon fiber masts.

GreatKetch.blogspot.com

The removal of the masts from the boat is easy. On my boat, each mast has two stainless steel rods that secure the mast to the keel step. The mast wedge on my boat is the spartite.

Disconnect wires, remove pins, and lift masts out.

Regarding the trucking of the masts: possible to secure masts on deck of boat, over hang on stern and bow, base of mast at stern. Check length and clearance of truck or trailer doing the transport.

Re: Seeking Other Herreshoff Cat Ketch Owners

CK (?),

Great to find you. I saw your blog some time ago but there was no way to contact you through it. Where are you?

My boat is in Port A at Island Moorings, where it has been for the last 3 yrs as I slowly get it into shape. Long haul getting the Yanmar running, I am not rich enough to afford a mechanic or other hired help so it is all me. Now I am sewing sail covers, repairing windlass, getting water tank holes fixed (was hell getting it out), etc... My lady friend and I use it for the most part as an overnight or two at the beach. BTW I am retired in San Antonio.

So hope to exchange some good information with you.

Cheers, Roger Peebles

Re: Seeking Other Herreshoff Cat Ketch Owners

By your blog I see you are in RI. Hob-nobbing with all those Newport sailors I am sure.

By golly, I have an immediate question. What are you using for the boot for the rudder linkage, the thing that goes thru a hole in the transom? The stainless rod between the wheel mechanism and the rudder attachment actually broke at a weld (surprise), so while replacing the repaired rod, I would like a new boot. Thanks, Roger

Roger,

What is your email? I'll correspond directly.

I have a new boot the covers the hole in the transom and allows the steering rod to move. It is actually a boot used in trucks for the stick shift mechanism. They are about 35-50 bucks.

The old boot was old and gave out.
