Re: Pros and cons of this Tanzer 26 please

I got the Tanzer. Going to see it on Friday. Owner says that the motor definitely runs and he is going to run it for awhile on Monday. Confirmed it only has a single battery for starting and house.

Thanks again for all the info.

Park and marina is close by. Ashtabula is about an hour by car.

Re: Pros and cons of this Tanzer 26 please

Boatpoker,

Thanks for the Marine Survey 101 link. I found it very useful. I will be printing out the checklist to take with me on Friday. Where should I pay extra attention to the Tanzer? I ask because of the chainplate comment near the end of the survey. It was built around 1983.

Thanks,

Bill

Not sure what to do for cleaning the sails. Think I may try to soak them in some powdered brewery wash. It's probably stronger than sail wash. No idea what they currently look like. They will need double or triple rinsing.

Two pictures the owner of the Tanzer sent me today.

Also said he ran the motor for a while today. And that the jib sail needs work. See pics.

Re: Pros and cons of this Tanzer 26 please

Don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but that jib looks like it is badly sun rotted. If so, it isn't worth repairing. A good DIY test for condiition of old Dacron cloth is to tae a sharpened #2 pencil and try to push it through the cloth. IF you can do so, it's pretty much history.

However, it is usually possible to find second hand sails that will fit and which are in pretty good shape, and for very reasonable prices. There are several big repositories of used sails... we used to deal with Bacon in Maryland IIRC (years ago, it was, but still hear good things about them).

I hope my interpretation of that pic is wrong, but sure doesn't look good to me.

Thanks Jim. I figured it may not be worth repairs. That was the purpose of the picture. Here is the text I received with the 2 pictures.

I ran the engine today for awile. We did some cleaning but it needs more. There is some work to do with the jib, its luff cover needs work. I have some pictures.

Ah ha! Dang if I didn't miss that... the damaged cloth does indeed appear to be the sun shield, not the sail itself. please disregard my doom crying in previous post. I need to remember to put on my glasses when looking at such pix! Replacing such covers isn't too epensive when done professionally, and not too daunting to DIY if you are so inclined.

Hope I didn't give you unnecessary worries!

Jim

On the contrary, Jim. I appreciate all the info I receive here. I don't know anything about sails. Owner said the sails need cleaned. Today he sent that picture and the comments. Probably should have copied and pasted the text when I posted the pictures. Thanks again.

Howdy.

You mentioned cleaning sails.

For those who have not yet done that, here is a link to many tips and opinions on how to best do it.

Re: Pros and cons of this Tanzer 26 please

Thanks Steady Hand. My phone keeps me from using the Google search feature. It opens the search box and immediately closes it.

What kind of stove came on the Tanzer? Tried all kinds of searches today and came up empty. Where can I find the dimensions of the entrance hatch? My gf is afraid she won't fit.

Thanks.
