Project boat wanted

Im looking for a sail boat project. I have lived on and refitted a boat years ago that I sadly sold when times got hard. I would like to find a project boat that needs loads of work and time on. I hope to sail to the med some day so I'm looking now in order to have plenty of time to finish the refit. If anyone knows of a boat that has been given up on, I would like to hear about it. Any condition, I am looking to rip everything out and start from scratch. It doesn't need to have an engine as I do have the chance of a great outboard motor. So even if it's an ex sunken and salvaged shell will be great.

Go to any marina and you will find several old boats that have been left to die. Drive around any coastal town and you will see projects that have been given up for the weeds. They are everywhere if you just look. Many of them are free. (Nothing is free - you may have to pay to haul it off). I recently ran across a guy with an Islander 29 that was in his yard from the previous homeowner. He didn't know what to do and didn't want to spend the money to have it hauled off. Free boat. I'm pretty sure it is still there if you want to come to the North Shore of Lake Pontchartrain and pick it up.

Yes your right! I live in the UK so that does limit thing down a whole load.

A word of caution: Sometimes a "free" boat is a worse deal than one reasonably priced. For instance, a free boat with moldy wet sails and rain water saturated throughout the boat sitting in some field is a much worse deal than the same type at $3000 that is floating and needs cleaned up, but is at least serviceable....

@Cheechako, I agree. I've seen some real rotten boats. It's so sad to see a boat that was once a prized loved item sitting with rust and holes. One boat out there has my name on her and she will be lovingly bought back to life again even if it takes me years to do.

I have fixed up two older boats, but I don't think it saves a lot of money. All of the gear that goes into a sailboat is not cheap.

A hull is a very small part of the cost of a serviceable sailboat.

I would look for something that was not bottom of the barrel as that ultimately might be less expensive.

Hi, I have a 37 foot Benateau with a little bit of fire damage inside only minor good sails and good mast and rigging probably get you that for $20,000 its a sleek looking boat . Also have a 28 foot full keel plastic yacht on the hard with a good mast that needs some tlc but readey to put in the water right away for $4000 usd this is a boat you could take around the world . i could also put you in a couple of steel rust buckets with some good gear for less then $3000 ...but you must promise to get them out of the yard . all these boats will come with a bit of free yard time to fix em up .
