New boat, Opinions on Bristol

Hi every one.

Thinking of putting an offer on this Bristol.

She needs a little work. The story goes she slipped her mooring and ended up on the rocks. I looked for hull penetrations but found no evidence she ever took on any water , good strong hull. The skeg took a wack and cracked her so I really can't put her back in the water until she is fixed, it has a crack where it meets the hull and has movement when you push on the bottom . Also has lots of filler here and there on the bottom of the keel and port side of hull at the water line, 2 foot square area, and the corners were knocked the off the keel and they just filled it up . The yard quoted me 7000$ to fix it but I thought that was on the light side, I figured it would be close to double that once they started .

The rest of the boat surveys well and is very dry on deck , beautiful interior woodwork.
I like the boat but really don't know what to offer on her , she seems a little over priced for her condition. What do you CF ers think ??

There are a lot of boats out there in pristine condition in that size and quality range, for less $. Sorry to be negative, but if your heart is set on this boat I'd try to get the price down.

I agree, this is the feedback I want, Pearson 422 comes to mind as an alternative. Even a Gulfstar 44 , but no centerline aft berth .

Yes $s are to high even for a Bristol.

Price seems high considering the damage you mentioned. There very well may be additional issues associated with the grounding that may not be evident for months or even a few years.
I found a few more examples on Sailboat Listings web-site of the slightly smaller 41.1 CC at more reasonable prices including one for less than half the 43.3 you are looking at.
Buyers market. Keep Looking.

Bristols are nice solid boats, but this one is too high priced and with damage! Why put out $ on this when there are plenty of suitable boats on market without damage and much less in price. Seems a easy decision. Look elsewhere.

They've got to be kidding on the price right? Is it a salvage title? That will limit future value. I dont get it.... or maybe they mean $16500?

I agree with all your suggestions, logistics are such, that the boat is so close. I need to sleep on it a bit more , I would jump on the boat if I could get it for half of the asking price but I really don't think that would happen. He needs to have it on the market for another year , then Im sure he would soften to the Idea .

Im not sure if it is a salvage title , would the brocker know that , would it show on the paperwork? wouldn't he need to disclose that upon any offer I would make?

Always liked these too. Needs some love , but the three cabins would really come in handy .

Just remember, the more feet, you keep adding to maintenance and mooring fees, just about everything. If you do not need 3 cabins then consider with keeping money in your pocket for cruising as OceanGirl suggested. Unless you do not plan on cruising. Then get biggest boat you can afford to sit in at dock.

This will be our last boat, had a few, we will be living aboard island hopping and the occasional Atlantic circle for as many years as our bodies stay healthy . A few extra dollars is okay, and I love to tinker and fix stuff . The big Irwin may work well for us , lots of room for guests , and that seems to be an ongoing thing . The series two were stick built , Im not really crazy about boats with liners .

I have never sailed an Irwin but been aboard a few , they seem like stout vessels . Seems to be a lot written about them , some good some bad , the last ones made seem to be the best , just like the Gulfstars.

One thing good for me ,if the boat is US or Canadian built I don't have to pay the 9.5 % Duty , thanks to the NAFTA agreement. When you put that with the HST, a foreign boat would cost me 22.5 % on top of the purchase price

I just had a chap look at that Irwin for me , NO WAY , WHAT A PIECE OF JUNK !

What do you think of the Bristol I mentioned at $100,000 leaves me a bit of room in case there is more damage then is seen. Im thinking of making a cash offer at that,

You seem to like quality, roomy, spacious, center cockpits.
Have you seen the Morgan's? Not perfect but very sweet vessels.
