Need Help with Davit Design for Canoe Stern

Hi Team,
I have recently purchased a 2004 Hans Christian 48T currently lying in Thailand.
I am looking at designs for a davit system for a canoe stern.
If anyone has any photographs / experiences / designs that could be incorparated into the davit system

Hey Shawn...welcome to the forum.

My CT48 has a canoe stern....I've plucked a couple pictures from my "albums" of what I came up with during my refit.

The horizontal 4" SS pipes have 4" wide X 1/4" SS plate inserted through their length in line with the davits, to keep the pipe from buckling.
It passes through the deck and is fixed to the floor of the lazarette

The close-up picture shows a center hub with a slot in it...the idea is to hoist the dingy in the conventional way, then pass a cargo type strap under it....feed the tail end into the slot in the hub (similar to what you'd see on the sides of a tractor trailer) then crank it using a winch handle.
This sandwiches the dingy between the strap and the under side of the davits, by lifting it and pulling it toward the stern, holding it very secure.

During passages when, the dingy will be stowed elsewhere and the davits can be turned in-board and dropped.


So far they work great...I havent put an outboard on yet...but often sail with two adults in the dink so is seems they're strong enough.

I couldn't agree more. Their simple look , uncluttered by appendages running off in search of support , combined with the dual use of stainless and teak is spectacular. Although they look as though they were part of the original boat[unlike many owner installed add-ons] they have a look about them that clearly exceeds the quality of anything coming out of any production shop. Thanks for showing them to us ; I want them on my boat, so you better hope they're well attached to yours!

Great form James,
They look superb, I'm not sure they'll fit on the stern of my Hans Christian because of the large bumpkin on the stern, but its sure worth considering.
Did you have any detailed sketches or drawings?

Thanks Murph...I did do some very detailed drawings of the strap/winch details but have no idea where I'd find them, I don't generally have any reason to save that kind of stuff.
I can say that the challenge was how to take the weight of the davit arm off the winch drum/pin (they share the same center/pivot point)..I did it by having the arm roatate and bear around a donut looking bushing that the drum/pin passes through....that way when I crank up the strap I'm not working against the weight of the arm.

I've had davit's on the bumpkin of my Hans 34T for 7 years, no trouble, just some funny looks in anchorages when I'm in the water in 11/2 minutes. I don't have any images tonight, will try to post tomorrow. BP would say it's what ruins good boats (said something like that in his book) and I wholey agree, but it sure is handy. I'll probably remove them before selling her.James S those are a beautiful piece of art!
